According to BBC, a zookeeper was killed by a lion in Nigeria after failing to secure the padlocks when he went to feed it. The victim, a 35-year-old man, worked at the “Presidential Library Wildlife Park.” The site in Abeokuta belongs to the country’s former president, Olusegun Obasanjo.

According to a statement from the zoo authorities, the zookeeper had taken some visitors to see the lion’s feeding routine outside of regular hours on Saturday night.

“The zookeeper, apparently, feeling comfortable with the animal, left the safety protection gate open and proceeded to feed the animal. He was mauled by the animal and died on the spot,” was the official statement from the venue.
The victim was identified as Babaji Daule and police said he was an experienced lion keeper. Incidentally, this incident comes less than a year after another keeper was attacked and killed by a lion at Obafemi Awolowo University, also in Nigeria.
Local police spokesman Omolola Odutola said that the lion inflicted serious fatal injuries on the man’s neck and that the lion was also put down in order to “prevent further mutilation of the body.”
