Women are totally making history! Annette Echikunwoke has just become the first woman in the U.S to win an Olympic medal in Hammer Throw.

The former Cincinnati Bearcat and dual citizen of Nigeria and the U.S, won a silver medal in the hammer throw at the 2024 Olympics.

Her impressive throw of 75.48 meters secured her second place. Although she briefly led the event, she was overtaken by Canada’s Camryn Rogers, who took the gold with a throw of 76.97 meters.

Annette Echikunwoke is a Nigerian-American hammer thrower who resides in Ohio, United States. She was born on July 29, 1996, and initially aimed to represent Nigeria at the 2020 Summer Olympics.

However, due to the negligence of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria, she was disqualified.

After the controversy, Annette changed her allegiance and is now representing the United States at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Annette’s athletic journey began when she won the shot put and discus throw at a school sports day event, inspiring her to pursue throwing events.

She attended the University of Cincinnati, where she became the university’s first NCAA champion in track and field by winning the weight throw event at the 2017 NCAA Championship.

Annette is ranked #7 in the world in women’s hammer throw and has also competed in shot put and discus.

As a fun fact, her cousin is the actress Megalyn Echikunwoke.
