Queen Elizabeth’s name is already in history books. At 95, she has become the longest monarch to reign in England and even though in the last months her health has been a concern, she does not have any plans to leave the crown. And there is a reason why.
After the death of her beloved husband, Prince Philip, many thought it was time for the Queen to rest and leave her work to someone else, being it Prince Charles. This belief came from the fact that the Duke of Edinburgh was one of the few people in the world whom she could truly rely on and trust.
So, now that she is alone and still isolated for precaution during the pandemic, her work is harder than ever.
Why the Queen will never abdicate?
The reason why Queen Elizabeth will never leave the throne has to do with a promise she made when she became a monarch not only to British people but to God as well.
When she received the crown at the coronation ceremony that took place on June 2, 1953, not only did she make a promise to God to take care of the throne but she also was anointed with holy oil, making the whole process extremely sacred.
According to Hugo Vickers, royal historian, this is why the Queen will never abdicate.
“Unlike any other European monarchs, she es an anointed Queen and as such, you never leave the throne”, told to The Guardian.
What will happen if she can no longer stay on duty?
There has only been one time in all British Monarchy history that an abdication has ever occurred and that was King Edward. This event meant a delicate constitutional crisis, so, the British parliament is barely prepared if the Queen decides to leave the throne.
However, if she gets ill or physically she can no longer stay on duty, the Parliament, not the Queen, must name a regent and it most likely will be Prince Charles.
But this brings another problem. The Prince of Wales’ popularity is not the best, so his regency will further weaken the Monarchy.
Of course, all these are just assumptions. Queen Elizabeth is about to turn 70 years on the throne and though she hasn’t been seen much, she continues to be a strong and dearest monarch.
