Tom Holland was a “slave to alcohol,” and there came a point when this problem, which he considered “small,” got out of control. All he did was “think about having a drink.” The actor revealed details of the hell he went through until he could accept that he had developed an addiction and how he decided to put an end to it.
“I’m happy to say it: I was definitely addicted to alcohol. I don’t deny it at all,” he confessed in an interview for Jay Shetty’s podcast. Tom revealed that after the Christmas party in 2022, he realized he had a problem with alcohol, and as a personal challenge, he tried to quit, which he found very complicated.
“It was very scary (…) I felt I couldn’t be social. That I couldn’t go to the bar and have a lemon soda. I couldn’t go out to dinner. It was really costing me a lot,” he admitted.
However, the actor was determined and made it a point not to drink for six months, even distancing himself from the rugby community, as his pals had a habit of drinking. Turning 27 on June 1, 2023, he was very happy and proud to achieve it.
“I was happier than I’ve ever been. I could sleep better. I could handle problems better. Things that went wrong on shoots, that would normally bother me, I could take them in stride. I had a lot more mental clarity. I felt healthier, fitter,” he said.
Tom Holland Takes a Break
Tom Holland revealed that after filming The Crowded Room for Apple TV, he took a break because his mental health was altered after playing Billy Milligan, who was called the ‘campus rapist.’ This man claimed to have 24 different personalities, becoming the first person to be found not guilty in the U.S. for mental incapacity, so instead of stepping foot in jail, he spent a decade in psychiatric hospitals.
“We were exploring certain emotions that I had never experienced before (…) Now I’m taking a sabbatical, and that’s a result of how difficult this series was,” admitted Tom Holland.
Despite all these hard processes he hasn’t been alone. Tom Holland has had the sincere and unconditional support of his girlfriend Zendaya, whom he met during the filming of Spider-Man: Homecoming.
“It’s interesting to be in a romantic relationship with someone who’s in the same boat as you. You get to share your experiences and all that kind of stuff, and that’s worth gold,” the actor acknowledged.
