When Diana Spencer got engaged to Prince Charles, she really thought her life was about to become a real-life fairy tale. As soon as the young soon-to-be princess was presented to the world and the public put their eyes on her, it became clearer that it was more to become a royal nightmare. The media and the people got obsessed with her beauty to the point that soon they started to pay more and more attention to her rather than to her fiancé. This would become one of the couple’s main problems.
Charles did not stand the fact that his new bride was deliberately more popular than him, and little did he know that after the wedding, it was going to be even more evident. For that reason, and to make them appear as equal, Diana was instructed on how she had to stand and even what type of garments she was allowed to wear to avoid stealing Charles’ thunder.
The insistence on protecting Charles’ image was so crucial, that Diana was not allowed to wear the shoes that she wanted on her wedding day. She became to be known as a rebel of sorts because she challenged what was expected of her as a royal. Still, she was not allowed to have her way on her wedding day.
She looked beautiful, of course, with a gorgeous wedding dress that became an instant classic and later served as inspiration for many other brides, but she was not allowed to wear high heels. Instead, she had to wear shoes with very low heels.
These were pointed-toe flats made specifically for her for the occasion by designer Clive Shilton. These simple shoes took over 6 months to make. Reportedly, she would have liked to wear more showy shoes, but the Royal Family chose otherwise, so she had to wear flats.
This decision was not for comfort purposes: the reason was that she could not look taller than Prince Charles. Diana was the same height as Charles, and if you look closely at photos of the couple, she even learned how to pose so that she would look shorter than him. Sometimes she would stand a bit farther to change the perspective or even tilt her head towards him a little bit to give that impression.
When the couple divorced in 1996, Diana decided to change her image through bolder looks that made her one of the biggest fashion icons in history. Of course, heels became a favorite of the former princess.
