These Celebrities Are Truly Taking Día De Muertos To Heart

1572637537781 celebrities honoring day of the dead - these celebrities are truly taking día de muertos to heartAh, Day of the Dead. Ask anyone who’s familiar with the tradition, and they’ll tell you it’s one of the most beautiful and endearing festivities in the world, filled with colors, laughter, and celebrations built around the value of life and the role death plays in our daily lives. Day of the Dead turns the otherwise gloomy or tragic veil that surrounds finitude on its head, and looks at death as an inexorable part of life rather than its alienated counterpart. Death is something to be acknowledged and respected, not feared and ignored. And the tradition knows that well.

With such a profound meaning, and as it becomes better known throughout the world, it’s hardly surprising that more and more people are taking Day of the Dead to heart. Take celebrities, for example, who are joining in the celebration this year—or at least channeling the spirit of the festivity through creative costumes.

An assortment of big names

One of the big names currently hyping the holiday is Eva Longoria. On Wednesday, it was announced that she will be the Grand Marshal on Friday’s Catrinas on the River Parade, which is part of the inaugural San Antonio Día de los Muertos Festival. The Desperate Housewives actress appeared on a video posted to the official Day of the Dead San Antonio Instagram page, with a caption that read:

“We are beyond excited to announce that the talented @evalongoria will celebrate Día de los Muertos as the grand marshal of our Catrinas on the River Parade! We’re also delighted to share that her wonderful nonprofit @evasheroes will also join as one of the several local organizations spotlighted in the parade.”

But Eva is not the only celebrity inspired by Day of the Dead this year. Singer Camila Cabello went full-on Catrina mode for Halloween with an amazing costume showcased on her Twitter account, reading “Happy Halloween cabrones.”

John Stamos also took a cue from the festivity, channeling a perfect Ernesto De La Cruz from Pixar’s Coco.

Finally, Kris Jenner honored Coco in her own way as well, as featured on Kourtney Kardashian’s Instagram Story.

Here’s to another good year

It’s marvelous that, at least to some extent, Day of the Dead is becoming more popular. It, of course, helps that some mainstream Hollywood films have featured it in one way or another, such as the aforementioned Pixar adventure (which is all about the tradition), or even James Bond’s Spectre, which featured a made-up Day of the Dead parade that has since become a must-see in Mexico City due to popular demand.

Whatever the reason, we can only hope more people learn about this beautiful tradition and its meaning. Happy Día de Muertos!
