Talking about Britney Spears means talking about one of the most iconic figures in pop music, but also a life marked by personal and media challenges.
For years, her story was steeped in controversy—especially due to the conservatorship that controlled every aspect of her life for over a decade. Yet we’ve seldom heard the perspective of someone as close to her as her now ex-husband, Sam Asghari.
In a recent interview, Sam opened up about what it was like to stand by Britney during one of the most difficult chapters of her life—from his initial shock at discovering how her conservatorship worked, to the challenge of supporting her under a level of public scrutiny few can imagine.
Sam Asghari Breaks His Silence on His Marriage to Britney Spears
During a recent appearance on Kate and Oliver Hudson’s Sibling Rivalry podcast, Sam Asghari discussed his relationship with Britney Spears and the complications they faced under her highly publicized conservatorship.

The 30-year-old actor admitted he initially knew very little about what the conservatorship involved.
“One day I start learning about what the conservatorship is, and that’s when I was like, ‘Wait a minute. I thought I’m in America. What do you mean someone over the age of 18 needs permission from their parents?’ ” he recalled. “That was the most difficult and weird spiral thing that I’ve witnessed in my life.”
Sam described the situation as “the strangest and most challenging” he has ever witnessed. He didn’t hesitate to support Britney during the #FreeBritney movement, making it clear that his priority was always to help her regain control of her life after 13 years of court-imposed restrictions.

Throughout the interview, Asghari emphasized how he tried to be a steady presence for Britney.
“I think the best thing to do is to provide support in that moment and that’s what I did, I provided as much as I could,” he said.
The conservatorship, led by Jamie Spears from 2008 until November 2021, controlled every facet of the singer’s life—from her finances to her personal decisions.
Sam recalled how difficult it was to witness people close to Britney exploiting her vulnerability.

Although their marriage ended just over a year after they tied the knot, Sam insists he holds no bitterness.
“I’m always gonna be grateful and happy that it ever even happened,” he admitted.
The couple, who married in June 2022, announced their separation in August 2023, and their divorce was finalized in May 2024.
“This was my experience in life that I had to go through very gently because if you do anything wrong, you say the wrong thing…” Asghari continued.
