Disturbing new videos have emerged, providing the clearest view yet of the moment an American Airlines passenger plane and a US Army Black Hawk helicopter collided midair, exploding into pieces and sending massive chunks of fiery debris crashing into the icy Potomac River below.
The cellphone footage, obtained exclusively by CNN, captures the tragic collision that occurred Wednesday night near Ronald Reagan National Airport in Washington, DC. The incident claimed 67 lives, marking the deadliest aviation disaster in the United States in nearly 25 years.

The videos show the Black Hawk helicopter’s red tail lights flashing as it rapidly approached the passenger jet, which was preparing to land. Moments later, the two aircraft collided, igniting a massive fireball. Large sections of the plane and helicopter spiraled downward, with debris plunging into the frigid river.
The American Airlines jet, carrying 60 passengers and four crew members, was found in three pieces in the water. Remnants of the helicopter, which had three soldiers on board, were also scattered across the crash site. Authorities have yet to determine the cause of the collision.
As recovery efforts continue, divers have retrieved the black boxes from the plane and are working to salvage the remains of both aircraft. Investigators are also preparing to recover the bodies of the remaining victims from the river.

The victims included teen figure skaters returning from a national competition, an Ohio college student traveling home from her grandfather’s funeral, two Chinese nationals, and a group of hunters returning from a guided trip in Kansas.
The footage has sent shockwaves across the nation, raising questions about aviation safety and the circumstances leading to the catastrophic collision.
