Pope francis’s final gift: a popemobile turned mobile health clinic for gaza’s children

Before his death, Pope Francis made one final request: that a popemobile he once used to greet the faithful be transformed into a mobile health clinic for the children of Gaza.

The vehicle—previously seen rolling through crowds during Francis’s 2014 visit to Bethlehem—has now been outfitted with medical equipment to provide life-saving care in a war zone. The announcement came Monday, the same day Israel’s security cabinet approved a plan to seize and remain in the Gaza Strip for an unspecified duration.

Caritas, the Vatican’s global aid federation, released images of the vehicle, now equipped with rapid test kits, oxygen supplies, syringes, vaccines, and a refrigerator for medicine. The vehicle is currently in Bethlehem, waiting for a humanitarian corridor to reopen.

“This vehicle represents the love, care and closeness shown by His Holiness for the most vulnerable,” said Anton Asfar, Secretary General of Caritas Jerusalem. “It is his final wish for the children of Gaza.”

Pope Francis’s Final Act: A Symbol of Peace in a Region at War

The gesture comes amid one of the deadliest and most prolonged conflicts in Gaza’s modern history. Since October 2023, Israel’s military campaign—launched in response to the October 7 Hamas attack—has killed over 52,000 Palestinians, according to Gaza’s health ministry. UNICEF reports that at least 15,000 of those killed were children.

Meanwhile, Israeli airstrikes and blockades have all but halted humanitarian aid. For over two months, food, clean water, and medicine have barely trickled into the Strip. Nearly a million children are now displaced.

Caritas Sweden confirmed that a team of doctors would staff the mobile clinic and work alongside a dedicated driver once the corridor opens.

“With this vehicle, we’ll reach children who today have no access to healthcare—those who are injured, malnourished, or simply forgotten,” said Peter Brune, the charity’s Secretary General.

The Pope Who Called Gaza Every Night

Pope Francis’s concern for Gaza was never abstract. During the final months of his life—including while hospitalized with pneumonia—he reportedly called the lone Catholic church in Gaza every night to check on the parish and those sheltering within.

He condemned the October 7 Hamas attacks and demanded the release of hostages, but he also became increasingly critical of the scale of Israel’s military response. In 2023, he called for an international investigation into whether Israel’s war amounted to genocide—a charge Israel has strongly denied.

On Easter Sunday, in his final major public address, Francis pleaded for a ceasefire and described the suffering of Palestinian and Israeli civilians alike as “shameful.”

A Vehicle, a Message, a Moral Reckoning

The transformation of the popemobile into a battlefield health unit is not just a logistical effort—it is a statement. For a pontiff who rejected armored cars in favor of proximity to the people, this final act is in keeping with his legacy: moral clarity in times of cruelty, and care for the overlooked.

“It’s not just a vehicle,” said Brune. “It’s a message that the world has not forgotten the children of Gaza.”

As the war stretches into its 19th month and Israel signals plans for long-term occupation, Pope Francis’s final gesture remains stalled behind closed checkpoints. But when the gates open, the wheels will turn—and his message of solidarity will roll into Gaza.
