Church bombed in syria - syria’s worst terrorist attack in years leaves 22 dead and dozens injured at church

It was supposed to be a quiet Sunday of prayer and reflection. Instead, it turned into one of the bloodiest attacks Syria has seen in years. As worshippers gathered inside a Greek Orthodox church, a suicide bomber entered, opened fire, and detonated his explosives — turning the sacred space into a scene of devastation.

The brutal attack killed at least 22 people and left 63 others wounded, according to Syrian state media. Survivors describe chaos, screams, and blood as the congregation was targeted during one of the country’s most sacred religious gatherings.

What Happened Inside the Church?

The attack occurred as roughly 350 people were gathered inside the church, located in an area under Damascus’ de facto Islamist rule. Witnesses say the assailant, with his face covered, entered the church, fired on worshippers, and detonated an explosive vest when brave members of the crowd attempted to stop him.

Some survivors and clergy members claim a second gunman was present, firing at the church door moments before the explosion.

“I saw people blown to bits,” recounted Issam Nasr, who was inside the church at the time. “We have never held a knife in our lives. All we ever carried were our prayers.”

Images shared by Syrian state media showed the aftermath — shattered pews, bloodstains, and debris scattered across the church floor.

Who Is Behind the Attack?

No group has officially claimed responsibility, but Syrian officials say their initial investigation points to the Islamic State (IS) extremist group. Authorities believe remaining IS cells, along with members of the ousted Assad regime, are attempting to destabilize the country.

Noureddine Al-Baba, a spokesman for the Syrian Interior Ministry, stated that “the security of places of worship is a red line” and vowed to hold the perpetrators accountable.

Rising Tensions and Fears of Extremist Violence

The attack highlights the fragile security situation in Syria, where President Ahmad al-Sharaa continues to face challenges in asserting control across the country. Many fear sleeper cells of extremist groups are lying in wait, ready to exploit instability.

Syria’s Information Minister, Hamza Mostafa, condemned the bombing as a “cowardly act” that violates the nation’s civic values. Meanwhile, Hind Kabawat, Syria’s Christian and female Social Affairs Minister, met with clergy to offer condolences and reaffirm the government’s commitment to protecting minorities.

Father Fadi Ghattas, one of the priests at the scene, said he witnessed the horror unfold: “There were 350 people praying at the church. I saw at least 20 dead with my own eyes.”

This bombing marks the deadliest assault on a Christian place of worship in Syria in recent memory, shaking the already vulnerable Christian minority.

As survivors mourn, the Syrian government faces mounting pressure to strengthen security and prevent further attacks. But for the families of the victims, the tragedy has already left a permanent scar — a reminder of the fragile peace that remains elusive in the war-torn nation.
