The Internet can be a savage and often subjective place; however, sometimes people can agree when someone is offensive or when there’s injustice in how some opinions can have consequences. This weekend, a heated debate was fueled on social media after actress Selma Blair made a very offensive Islamophobic comment.
The Cruel Intentions star commented on a post about state representatives Cori Bush and Rashida Tlaib voting against a bill proposing to ban Hamas members from the United States. In the comment that has now been erased, Blair asked for “all these terrorists supporting goons” to be deported. She added that “Islam has destroyed Muslim countries and then they come here and destroyed minds.” Absolutely a hate crime as many noted immediately.
For many, what was more outraging was how differently the world and the power spheres have reacted to the matter comparing Selma Blair’s clearly hateful comment with no consequences to Melissa Barrera’s post asking to cease fire and with information on organizations helping the civilians in Gaza that cost her her job in Scream 7. Of course, the backlash was noticeable enough to make Blair issue an apology on social media.

This past Tuesday, the actress posted a lengthy text on the matter opening with a reflection on what has been going on in the world: “This is a time of great pain and anguish for many around the world, but it is also a time to learn and better understand how words matter.” Then she goes on to address the comment she made saying that she “mistakenly and inadvertently conflated Muslims with Radical Islamists and fundamentalists, a terrible error in my words, and resulted in hurting countless people I never meant to, and I deeply regret this.”
“As soon as my error was brought to my attention, I deleted the comment. Hate and misinformation are amplified so easily these days. This time by my own hands. In this instance, I erred in my writing and I fully recognize how I contributed to the Muslim community being understandably very upset,” said Blair.
“It’s quite something that Selma Blair can be such openly vile and bigoted and call for the death of an entire population with impunity but Melissa Barrera cannot share a link to donate to Palestinian refugees without her agency almost dropping her.” https://t.co/EKk0p1i8Lp

The Legally Blonde antagonist added that she’s taking this incident as an opportunity to educate herself and thanked her Muslim friends for their help in better understanding her mistake and the damage her words can have. “I am committed to paying forward their love and understanding. We cannot allow ignorance and rage to become our downfall. I raise my hand in humility and volunteer to break the chain.”
By the end, Selma Blair finally issues her apology, hoping her mistake can help open communication bridges in this polarized world: “I apologize to those in the Muslim community who I offended with my words. I apologize to my friends. And I apologize to anyone I hurt. And I will do better.”
