Michael Oher and the Tuohy family are still in the eye of the storm after the NFL player claimed that he was never legally adopted and that his guardians used his name to benefit financially. His story was one of the most inspiring of the last twenty years, even the film The Blind Side became a favorite of the public, as it captures a part of his life.
However, Oher claimed that the movie is not what it seems, and filed a lawsuit against his “adoptive” parents.
Tuohy Family Responds to Michael Oher’s Accusations
The Tuohy family claims that Michael Oher’s accusations were “outlandish,” “hurtful,” and “absurd,” and even that before making them in court, he tried to extort $15 million from them. Marty Singer, the family’s lawyer, assured that this is not the first time Oher has done something similar and even mentioned that before filing his 14-page petition, he threatened them by saying that if they did not pay, he would make a negative story about them in the press.
Likewise, the lawyer denied all the allegations in the court filing and explained that Sean and Leigh Anne Tuohy did not deceive the former NFL star at all to obtain his guardianship when he was 18 years old.
“The conservatorship was established to help with Mr. Oher’s needs, ranging from getting him health insurance and obtaining a driver’s license, to helping him with college admissions. If Mr. Oher wishes to terminate the conservatorship, either now or at any time in the future, the Tuohys will never object,” stated Marty Singer.
Regarding the success of the movie and the alleged millions Oher did not receive for the Tuohys, Singer asserted that those allegations were also nonsense.
“The notion that a couple worth hundreds of millions of dollars would collude to withhold a few thousand dollars in profit-sharing payments from anyone, let alone someone they loved like a son, defies belief,” the family’s attorney said.
“Over the years, the Tuohys have given Mr. Oher an equal share of every penny received from ‘The Blind Side.’ ‘ Even recently, when Mr. Oher began to threaten them about what he would do unless they paid him an eight-figure windfall and, as part of this extortion effort, refused to cash the family’s small winnings checks, they still deposited Mr. Oher’s equal share into a trust account they set up for their son,” he revealed.
Singer confessed that Oher had already tried this gambit several times, even though many of his lawyers realized that it would be a lie and they would stop representing him until he found someone who would help him. He also mentioned that Michael Oher’s lawsuit is a strategy to get attention in the middle of his last book tour.
Finally, Marty Singer revealed that the family is “heartbroken” by everything that is happening and, despite everything, they hope to reconcile with Oher soon, although they will not hesitate to defend themselves and defeat the lawsuit.
