The Barbie movie is without a doubt one of the most anticipated films of the year, and each preview lefts us wanting more! A new official trailer was just released and, of course, fans dissected each second of it to find easter eggs and more details on the story that Greta Gerwig has prepared for us.
For the first time, we got to understand a bit more about what the movie will be about and we’re not disappointed! But one thing that only very devoted fans of the iconic doll were able to appreciate in the trailer is a very special and touching cameo. In a brief scene by the end of the trailer, we can see Barbie her talking to an old woman sitting on a bench in the real world. The woman says to her “Humans only have one ending, ideas are forever” and then the trailer goes on with a hilarious scene of Ken with a doctor. Well, the lady in the park is no other than Barbara Handler!
If you’re not a Barbie fan, let us explain. We could say that Barbara Handler is no other than the real Barbie, the inspiration for the doll that became a sensation all over the world and revolutionized dolls forever. More explicitly, Barbara Handler is the daughter of Ruth Handler, the creator of Barbie. As a matter of fact, Ruth took both her children’s names for her creations, Barbie and Ken.
Now, although the Handler family was not involved in the production of the movie whatsoever, the fact that Barbara agreed to make this special cameo tells us how they feel about this live-action homage. Months ago, when the first teaser of the movie was released, the 81-year-old Barbie inspiration declared that she thought Margot Robbie nailed the part of Barbie and was especially surprised by her voice. She added that liked the chemistry between Margot and Ryan Gosling and that they seem “to be great together.”
This heartwarming easter egg on the film shows how Greta Gerwig is all about making a loving homage to the iconic doll, while still being true to her filmmaking perspective. From what we’ve seen so far, we can tell that Barbie will be a deep movie with a thoughtful message full while also giving us the pink fantasy we all grew up with!
