Because the millennial nostalgia craze has made everyone revisit our favorite childhood stories, we’re getting a new adaptation of Roald Dahl’s book and classic 1990 film The Witches. The creepy yet really entertaining story about Luke, a boy who is turned into a mouse by the leader of a witch coven, is going to be back on the screen after 28 years. Though the original is perfect in every single way, there are so many cool people involved in the remake, that there is a possibility it could become a new classic for this generation (not to mention there’s also all the great technological advances we have today to create the coolest special effects).

The film will follow the story of a young boy who accidentally meets a group of witches who hate children so much, that they are plotting to get rid of them all by turning them into mice. Rumor has it that Academy Award-winning actress Anne Hathaway will take on the lead role of the Grand Witch (originally portrayed by the amazing Anjelica Huston), while her terrifying coven sisters are still yet to be found or revealed.

Among the rumors surrounding this production, it’s been said that award-winning actress Viola Davies is also considering joining the project, but there’s nothing official yet. What is known is that the movie will be directed by Robert Zemeckis (from Forrest Gump and Back to the Future) and that it will be produced by the highly-acclaimed filmmakers Alfonso Cuarón (Roma) and Guillermo del Toro (The Shape of Water), so if there’s anything we can be sure about, it’s this: the movie will be creepy AF.

Unlike the original film, the remake will be closer to Dahl’s story, which is a good thing, considering that the Welsh author was terribly disappointed with how the nineties version turned out. Tim Burton’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, one of the last Dahl adaptations, wasn’t that faithful to the book either, so there’s a chance that this new movie could be become the best of Roald Dahl’s adaptations to date.

All suppositions aside, and despite the fact that Anjelica Huston isn’t very excited about the remake, the few things we know about it already make it sound really promising. I can’t wait to see what these creative minds come up with, and how Anne Hathaway sheds the sweet persona we’re used to from her previous roles (no need to talk about Fantine) to become an eerie and machiavellian witch. There’s no release date so far, so we can guess it’ll come out sometime in 2020.

Here’s the trailer for the original film, so you can start getting those witchy vibes, while we wait for the remake:
