Twenty-four years ago, when she was right at the peak of her career, Selena gave an iconic show that would change Tex-Mex music forever. Not only did she break all sorts of records by selling out the entire Houston Astrodome, but she also did it by singing in Spanish, surrounded by her always-faithful fans who, without knowing it, were seeing her perform live for the last time.
This particular show has become one of Selena’s most viewed shows, naturally, because it became emblematic for being her last live performance, but also because it was beautifully portrayed in the Gregory Nava’s iconic 1997 biopic, where the star was played by Jennifer Lopez.
For years, most of us have only been able to enjoy it in very poor quality on YouTube, but there’s also the super fans who bought the DVD when it was released in 2003. But now, we can all enjoy it and get immersed in that epic night one more time thanks to Amazon Prime.
Selena -The Last Concert: Live From the Astrodome will feature 54 minutes of Selena at her best, singing all the classics, like “Bidi Bidi Bom Bom,” “Amor Prohibido,” “Si Una Vez,” and that great disco medley including covers of “I Will Survive” and “Funky Town.”
The show, where Selena wore her iconic purple jumpsuit, first aired on Univision in 1995. Just one month later, Selena was tragically murdered. However, the joy and passion she showed at that incredible concert will always be one of the best ways to remember the great Tex-Mex Queen.
