Greta Thunberg Is Free, But What She Lived Through Will Never Be Forgotten: The Torture She Endured by Israeli Forces

For Greta, this was never about her or the activists who were detained — but the torment she endured will remain etched in memory.

Greta Thunberg has just been released after being detained by Israeli forces who intercepted a flotilla attempting to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza. What happened while she and the other activists were held is something the world should never forget.

Greta Thunberg was detained by Israel along with more than 450 international activists who were trying to break the naval blockade on Gaza and deliver humanitarian supplies. The so-called Global Sumud Flotilla — made up of more than 40 vessels from 19 countries — was carrying baby food, medicine, and basic necessities. However, before reaching their destination, the boats were intercepted by the Israeli navy in international waters, raising alarms over possible violations of maritime and human rights law.

The Horrific Treatment Greta Thunberg Allegedly Suffered

Although the Israeli government claimed that no activists were mistreated and that their rights were respected, testimonies and diplomatic reports tell a completely different story. According to multiple sources, Greta Thunberg and several of her companions were kept in unsanitary cells, without enough food or water. Some described being beaten, dragged by the hair, and forced to kiss Israeli flags. Others were held for up to 40 hours without access to drinking water, forced to drink from toilets while being denied medical care or contact with lawyers.

Greta reportedly developed a severe skin irritation after days without basic hygiene conditions, a detail confirmed by Swedish diplomats. Despite this, she refused to sign her immediate deportation, determined to bring attention to what they were enduring and to keep the international spotlight on Gaza.

Still, Thunberg urged that the focus shouldn’t be on what she or the other activists went through, but rather on the reason behind their actions — to denounce a blockade that has left millions trapped in a humanitarian crisis.

After her release, Greta told the press:

“I could speak for a long time about the abuses we suffered in prison, believe me, but that’s not the point. What matters now is that Israel continues escalating the genocide and mass destruction against the Palestinian people.”

Greta’s release represents far more than freedom from a cell — it’s a reminder that while she and the others return home, the Palestinian people remain trapped, struggling to survive among ruins. And no matter who tries to silence it, the echo of what the Global Sumud Flotilla endured will keep traveling the world, demanding that no one forget what truly matters.
