The 15-Day Challenge To Become A Stylish Woman

Defying fashion can bring negative consequences into your life. And no, we’re not talking about the legendary Joan Rivers and her slew of acolytes who set the rules of contemporary fashion. We’re talking about the real fashion police, the ones who intend to dictate what you should wear in esthetic, social, and even political terms.

One afternoon in 1595, a sassy Genoese man called Salvaggio de Aste was arrested while he walking on San Siro square. The reason? He was wearing an extravagant and fancy outfit that broke the state rules of what men should wear on the streets. His crime went against the fashion precepts of his time, and his insolence wasn’t well received by the Magistrato delle Pompe de Genoa, the officer in charge of regulating what clothing was appropriate. He was condemned for his flamboyant attire. It wasn’t that his clothes were revealing or lacking in style. On the contrary, the textures and colors he chose showed an excessive waste of money that was seen as immoral, according to the standards of Italian customs. He was basically judged for going against the simplicity of humankind.

We tend to think that nowadays there’s no such thing as a fashion police going after the people who dare to break with the standards of social normalcy. However, there are places where women are being harassed by the police for wearing a hijab in public, and they’ve even implemented a ban to Muslim scarves. Even in places where people can dress the way they like, there are implied fashion rules that dictate what clothes or styles are appropriate for determined spaces. We should start breaking with these beauty and fashion norms and dare to wear the clothes we want.

Expressing ourselves through fashion has become a need in a society that prioritizes individuality. If you manage to experiment each day with something new you’ll refine your fashion taste and become a more stylish person far from the implied social monotony.
