The first trailer for A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood, a biopic in which Tom Hanks will play Fred Rogers has just hit Youtube. Fred Rogers, a.k.a. Mister Rogers, was the beloved TV personality, host of Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood (1968). As the trailer shows, a journalist called Lloyd Vogel arrives at the set of Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood, a show that influenced an entire generation of children. Vogel is supposed to write a profile on Rogers for which he has to interview him for Esquire magazine. Though Vogel is initially cynical, he eventually changes his perspective on life by getting to know what Rogers has to say about it.
Director Marielle Heller (Can You Ever Forgive Me?) was in charge of the project while the screenplay is based on the real-life article that journalist Tom Junod’s wrote for Esquire. Noah Harpster and Micah Fitzerman-Blue adapted it and came up with this story. The movie will follow a sort of Mr. Rogers craze, after the release of documentary Won’t You Be My Neighbor, about Fred Rogers in which Junod also appeared.
@thankyoumisterrogers
Who is better to play a children’s idol than Tom Hanks, America’s Dad? I’d like to see what he can do. A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood is due to arrive in theaters on November 22.
