The Incredibly Romantic Love Story Of Paul and Linda McCartney In 25 Photos

Linda McCartney was Paul’s true love, muse, and inspiration, and these photos are evidence of their larger-than-life love story.

Almost sixty years after the creation of The Beatles, the band and its members are still considered some of the best rock musicians in history. Not only did they revolutionize pop culture forever, but they also represented a huge historical shift in the youth's mindset that still has an important impact in today’s idea of music and entertainment. And as such, the much beloved Liverpool quartet lost their freedom and became the people's property, or at least that’s how they were sold by their own managers. So, how could a real love story emerge in such crazy circumstances and end up as strong as Paul and Linda McCartney’s did?

Anything even remotely associated with The Beatles could be marketed and sold (even their hair was sold at auctions), and their “private life” was the only thing they had a little control of. It’s widely known, for instance, that poor Cynthia Lennon and her son were kept far from the spotlight, out of fear that her presence would affect John and the other members' appeal. In fact, Brian Epstein, their manager, forbade The Beatles from dating publicly, but eventually, they rebelled against this rule.

They decided instead to focus only on creating music and having some time for themselves. By the next year, John, George, and Ringo were involved in extremely toxic relationships. Paul, however, remained the only eligible bachelor. That is until he met the woman who would become the love of his life, Linda Eastman.

Not only was she talented, but she was also one of the first female photographers to capture some of the most important and iconic musicians at the time, including The Rolling Stones, Aretha Franklin, Jimi Hendrix, and Bob Dylan. Paul and Linda met at a club in 1967 and, as Paul always claimed, he was immediately drawn to her. Linda, who was already a Beatles fan, had a little crush on Lennon, but she lost interest in him when she felt a connection with the “cute” Beatle. They started dating almost right away and, just two years later, they tied the knot in London.

Linda had been married before to Melville See Jr., a geologist she had met in college, and even had a daughter with him, Heather. Their marriage lasted only three years, and though Linda was reluctant to get married again, it was Paul’s genuine love for her daughter that convinced her he was the one.

When The Beatles split in 1970 (after Paul sued the band), the couple decided to embark on a new project together. Paul taught Linda how to play the keyboard and, together, they released RAM, Paul’s first solo album. Soon, they founded the now-famous rock band Wings, with which they toured and recorded several albums that garnered a lot of praise. They were the perfect team in every way, in business and their relationship.

Their 29-year relationship was Paul’s most creative period in musical terms, but also, as he always says, the happiest time of his life. Sadly, Linda was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1995 and passed away three years later due to complications, leaving in Paul and their kids a big void to fill.

Then, in 2011, Paul met his current wife, Nancy Shevell, with whom he’s been ever since (she has also inspired him to write some amazing love songs). Still, though he’s clearly happy again, there’s no doubt Linda still holds an important place in his heart, not only as the mother of his children, but also as the woman who showed him what true love really is.
