Matthew Perry, best known for his role as the sarcastic yet lovable Chandler Bing, was found unresponsive in his Los Angeles home’s hot tub on October 28, 2023. He was later pronounced dead at the age of 54.
The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office determined that Perry’s death was caused by the acute effects of ketamine. The report also noted contributing factors, including drowning, coronary artery disease, and the presence of buprenorphine in his system.

In a candid conversation with Vanity Fair, Aniston reflected on her decades-long friendship with Perry and the emotional toll of watching him struggle with substance abuse. She admitted that while Perry was still alive, she and the rest of the Friends cast were “mourning him for years,” as his ongoing battles often left them fearing the worst.
“We had been mourning him long before he passed,” Aniston shared. “We loved him deeply, but there were times it felt like we had already lost parts of him.”
For Aniston, the pain of losing Perry has been intertwined with the relief of knowing he is no longer suffering.
“The devastation was—and still is—real,” she said. “But there’s a small sense of peace in knowing he’s free from pain now.”
Perry’s death sparked an outpouring of tributes from friends, fans, and fellow actors, all of whom remembered him not only for his comedic genius but also for his openness about his struggles. Authorities allege that Plasencia was one of several medical professionals involved in prescribing or supplying the drug outside legal medical guidelines.
This plea is part of a wider investigation into the sourcing of the drugs found in Perry’s system, which also includes multiple other defendants.
