Akira Kurosawa nació en Shinagawa, Japón, el 23 de marzo de 1910 y murió el 6 de septiembre de 1998 en Tokio. Fue un pintor frustrado por su autoexigencia y así fue como decidió dedicarse al cine, en el que se inició como guionista. Hoy es considerado uno de los más célebres directores de cine japonés.
Comenzó su carrera con el filme Sugata Sanshiro (La leyenda del gran Judo), dirigió más de 30 películas, entre ellas algunas tan conocidas como Los siete samuráis, Rashmon o Dersu Uzala. En 1990 recibió un Oscar honorífico por su trayectoria.
Al final de su vida, Kurosawa se dedicó a hacer una lista de sus películas favoritas, y seguramente le fue un tanto difícil decidirse porque no eligió 10, eligió cien.
La sensibilidad que caracterizó la trayectoria de este célebre director japonés, aunada a la erudición cinematográfica que poseía, como resultado de haber visto miles de filmes, hacen extraordinaria esta lista. Kurosawa decidió auto-imponerse una guía e incluir sólo un título de cada director, lo que le obligó a dejar fuera obras maestras de ciertos genios cinematográficos que crearon más de una obra brillante.
