Are you ready for 2019? This year will be super exciting in books, since we are expecting some comebacks from already recognized authors and a few debuts that are worth keeping an eye on. From fantasy and sci-fi, to literary fiction, read on to find out what you should be paying attention to.

The Winds of Winter by George RR Martin (Or is it?)

Okay, before you get your hopes up, we still don’t know if Winds of Winter will be published this year for sure, but there is a possibility. Perhaps the most anticipated book of all is the next part of George RR Martin’s Winds of Winter, the next part of his series, The Song of Ice and Fire, which we all know has been adapted into HBO’s hit show, Game of Thrones.

Martin has been taking for-freaking-ever because he wants to get it just right. Meanwhile, the TV show has already resolved many of the previous book’s cliffhangers, completely spoiling big chunks of everyone’s storyline, even confirming that (SPOILER ALERT!), yes, R+L=J. But Martin keeps delaying its publication without an end on sight. Could this be the year, though?

The Wind That Lays Waste by Selva Almada

This is Argentinian writer Selva Almada’s debut in English. Back in Argentina, she’s known for her exquisite prose and on-point social criticism. The Wind That Lays Waste tells the story of four very different people who get trapped in a storm and are forced to confront each other and themselves. Almada’s talent is undeniable, so you should definitely look forward to getting this book.

3. The Testaments by Margaret Atwood

Margaret Atwood, aka the best Canadian writer in the history of ever, announced that the sequel to her bestselling dystopian novel The Handmaid’s Tale would be released in September 2019. Title? The Testaments.

The Handmaid’s Tale tells the story of a woman in a future United States where women have zero rights and are used as breeding vessels, and The Testaments will pick up where the story left off and continue from three different perspectives.

Jamaican writer Marlon James won the Man Booker Prize back in 2015 with A Brief History of Seven Killings, so naturally, everyone is freaking out about his next novel, Black Leopard, Red Wolf. This book is about a top-notch hunter slash mercenary on a mission to find a missing boy and solve the mystery of his disappearance. It’ll be the first part of a major trilogy, and I already want it all.

Lost Children Archive by Valeria Luiselli

This book follows a family on their trip to the US-Mexico border, to the place where Apaches used to live. While listening to music in their car, news break about an “immigration crisis:” a bunch of kids are attempting to enter the country through the border.

As the family drive through the Midwest and South, their own problems begin to surface. This is the Mexican literary star’s new novel, so it will probably receive a lot of attention besides the great reviews it’s already gathering. Don’t miss it!

So, if you feel you’re behind on some readings, these are great books to look forward to next year. Who knows? Maybe 2019 will be your year of books.
