If you find it difficult to concentrate on the words while listening to an audiobook, there are plenty of things you can do at the same time that will not distract you from the book itself. These are some activities you can do to enjoy an audiobook, while still staying physically active, and book recommendations to go along with them.
1. Do your laundry
The routine of doing your laundry can be boring without some kind of entertainment to make the time go faster. It’s also the perfect activity to keep your body moving, but your mind free to listen.
There’s nothing like getting a good laugh while washing your clothes. Plus, hearing a celebrity’s memoir, filled with the outrageous and mundane combined, will feel like listening to gossip from a friend.
@heather_lynn84 Recommendation: Yes Please by Amy Poehler
2. Get into cooking
If you’re a master multitasker, then cooking is a great activity for listening to an audiobook. You still need to split your attention to read recipes, but you won’t be so distracted that you’ll miss the story.
Whether you’re making an easy-breezy 20-minute meal or challenging yourself to a Chopped-style cooking extravaganza, you can’t go wrong with a chef’s memoir or cookbook.
@foodiggity Recommendation: Kitchen Confidential: Adventures in the Culinary Underbelly by Anthony Bourdain
3. Start coloring
Sometimes, you just want to relax and let your mind wander, though not far enough that you lose track of your audiobook.
The recent popularity in adult coloring books gives you plenty of options to choose from, with patterns and themes for all tastes.
@_thejimreaper_ Recommendation: The Ocean at the End of the Lane by Neil Gaiman
4. Pump it up with exercise
Whether you take a spin class or just started weight training, the right motivation is a must.
You may think that music is the best bet, but don’t count out a riveting audiobook. There’s nothing like the chase of a monster or threat of a murderer at your back to get a good cardio going.
@inkybookworm Recommendation: Feed by Mira Grant
5. Get on the road
Road trips and audiobooks go hand in hand. Those long drives out on open highway with nothing much to look at are perfect for getting into a juicy story.
If you’ve got a road trip buddy, then perhaps a mystery/thriller is best (during the day at least). If you’re on your own, then maybe pick up a light comedy.
Recommendation: Bird Box by Josh Malerman
