One of my favorite celebrity stories regarding tattoos is definitely Johnny Depp’s. It’s one of those examples of why you should never get your partner’s name tattooed on your skin, but the anecdote also shows that it doesn’t matter how much you screw your life up, you can always come back in a funny and irreverent way. These are old news, but in case you didn’t know, Depp and Winona Ryder had one of those short but intense “love” Hollywood stories everybody loves. It was so intense that he even got a tattoo on his arm with the words “Winona Forever.” However, when the relationship was over, instead of just removing it all, he decided he wanted to get creative and simply erased the last two words of Winona’s name, resulting in the most awesome come back ever: “Wino Forever.”
The thing with celebrities in general terms is that they have a special status and are seen as a sort of elite, so one would believe they have access to the best things the world can offer. We worship them and everything concerning their lives and tattoos is not the exception. There are websites devoted to analyzing and compiling celebrities’ tattoos so their followers can know a deeper side of their souls, of course, if we believe tattoos generally represent our personality. However, as you’ll see below, that’s not really the case, and often their tattoos leave much to be desired.
Cara Delevingne
The famous supermodel has used her skin as a canvas in too many occasions, and although we think of her as one of the finest examples of extreme beauty, we could not say the same about some of her tats. She has a bunch of extremely bad tattoos but while choosing her worst design, the competition was hard between the lion finger tattoo and one she has on the sole of her foot that reads “bacon”. Now, the lion tat won just because getting a finger tattoo is not one of the best ideas. They might look nice at first, but with the passing of time, they just look like a messy patch of ink. In that way, her huge lion now might not look as mighty as one could think. However not all her ink decisions are as bad as they seem. She actually has an elephant made by the famous tattoo artist, Dr. Woo.
Rihanna
It was quite hard to choose which of RiRi’s many tats is the worst, even more difficult to decide if she really has one that’s impressive or at least well done. But let’s start with the don’ts of her tattoos. I had to go with her hand tattoo because it has a lot of negative issues. First, she had gotten some sort of chevron design that, as expected from a hand tattoo’s evolution, looked quite worn-out. Instead of removing it or getting something to conceal it, she just got one inspired by traditional Indian henna tattoos. Now, the latter doesn’t look that bad, but the fact that you can see her previous tattoo through the design makes it look messy. On the bright side, if there’s one to choose, I’d go for her constellation of stars on her neck and upper back, because as a unity it doesn’t look that bad. I’m not a fan of stars, but they’re not as badly made as others she has.
Harry Styles
The pop star, former One Direction member, has more tattoos than seconds in a minute. But you know what they say, what matters is the quality not the quantity. Now, I must accept that most of his tats have a very good quality, but the designs are not quite as nice. The thing when you have so many tattoos is that the idiotic ones are easily blended, so you don’t really get to see those bad ideas. Now, for me, his worst tat is the all-black heart. It’s not a great idea to get a fully filled shape. However, he seemed smart enough to get another heart that’s quite nice.
Drake
Most of the musician tattoo’s are portraits of either the musicians he admires or important people in his life. Most of them are not badly made. The problem, if there was one, as with our previous star, is the design. The one I chose as a negative one is the bottle of his favorite fragrance, Drakkar Nº 1. Yeah, I don’t know if getting a fragrance tattoo is that meaningful, but who knows? On the other side, he has one tattoo that’s actually very nice, both in design and quality. He has Toronto’s CN Tower to honor his place of birth.
Justin Bieber
Justin’s life changed abruptly since he was a very young boy, and as such, his path of bad decisions began. Sorry, beliebers. When he was still a teenager he got what he says is a seagull in his abdomen, but frankly, it doesn’t really have shape. Now, above all his multiple tattoos, he has one that’s not as bad, a black-inked tiger of high quality.
Miley Cyrus
Miley went from innocent girl to a rebellious woman in a blink of an eye. But being rebellious doesn’t necessarily mean making the best decisions, or at least that’s what Miley’s inside lip cat tattoo proves. Still, time shows us that one can mature (a little bit) and make better choices, at least in tattoo terms. She got a nice tattoo of her dead blowfish to honor him.
Adam Levine
Nothing can be wrong with Adam Levine. Considered once the sexiest man on earth, it would seem that nothing can ruin his good looks. However, he has some tattoos that, upon further inspection, can make us cringe a little bit. On his back, he has a black paw to honor his deceased dog, and although the gesture is very cute, the tattoo is the opposite. The other tattoo I chose is not really his favorite, since he’s stated it’s his most stupid one, but actually, in terms of technique and design, it’s one of his best. It’s the sun resting on a bed of flowers.
Ariana Grande
The last addition to our list would have to be Ariana Grande’s “7 Rings” tattoo fail. Grande got it in order to celebrate the upcoming launch of her fifth studio album, Thank U, Next, and to immortalize “7 Rings,” one of her most personal and creative songs to date. Yet, for some reason, she wanted to do it in Kanji on the palm of her hand. Not only was it painful to get, but it turns out that she missed some symbols, and though she wanted to get “7 Rings,” she ended up getting symbols that translate to “BBQ Grill.” Who knows, maybe Grande is in fact an avid meat eater and the joke’s on us.
Yes, celebrities might have everything. However, sometimes they lack good judgment when decorating their bodies. Fortunately, their fails can set examples for us mortals so we don’t make the same choices.
