Prehispanic Illustrations That Deal With Sexual Perversions And A Cult Of The Vagina We All Have

White Kiss, cunnilingus, bondage, pomoir, quickie, threesomes, bud sex, sadomasochism, voyeurism, orgies, fetichism…Huitzilopochtli, Coyolxauhqui, Quetzalcóatl, Tláloc, Mictlantecuhtli, Tezcatlipoca, Xochipilli, Tonatiuh, Metztli, Xipe Tótec…
The previous lists belong to two completely different semantic fields. The idea of these words merging into a single image seems chaotic and nonsensical. Sex and culture. Pleasure and deities. Erotic practices and Pre-Columbian figures. These are some of the unthinkable combinations that a polemic Mexican artist created out of a fusion of Pre-Hispanic elements and sexual scenes.
Rurru Mipanochia is the pseudonym that this young illustrator uses to sign her creations. In her own words “Rurru” stands for a “girl-boy-thing who likes dicks, pussies, tushies, testicles… Sometimes they dress as a woman, but most of the times they’re a chimera. They like chocolate ice cream, cheese, popcorn, but above all, what they enjoy the most is touching their pussy; they love caressing it and rubbing their clitoris until it burns and drains while thinking of YOU, or her, or him.”

When dealing with art, all censorship disappears; in fact, the vagina has always had a crucial spot in art and culture. Besides, it’s the part of the female body that’s related to sexuality, pleasure, and eroticism; the vulva is, so to speak, the source of life. Vaginas are symbols of fertility and, at the same time, allegories of desire. In some cultures, representations of the labia are charms against evil powers. Finally, there’s a cult of the vagina rooted many centuries ago in petroglyphs and recreated nowadays in illustrations like Rurru’s.

The time period before the Spanish Conquest and Colonization is known as Pre-Hispanic. Everything that existed in America before the arrival of the Iberian invaders (culture, languages, buildings, etc) is part of Pre-Hispanic civilization. Those elements have a unique aesthetic; most of them refer to nature’s origin and the power of wildlife. That’s why Rurru’s illustrations have eagle heads, snakes, headdresses, clay figurines, among other creatures that represent each of the Gods of the Olmec, Aztec, Toltec, and Zapotec cultures.

The artist uses the richness of Pre-Hispanic decorative elements to portray in sketches and Mexican colors, the sexual perversions we all have within. The vagina, despite being a part of the body, is a barely known world that not many dare to explore. Nevertheless, through a potpourri of paper and colors Rurru delves into the eroticism of this organ and other feminine features, and looks into its corporality and the cult of the vagina.

Just as it is normal to search for the greatest orgasm, showing respect and admiring the sexual act as a whole should be part of our culture.
However, instead of loving our bodies –the means to obtain the desired pleasure–, we insist on confessing and punishing our sexual “sins.”

With her illustrations, Rurru manages to break taboos and stereotypes. This series shows fantasies of unique beauty and diverse sexual tastes. The character Rurru disguises itself as deities such as Huehuecóyotl, Tlazoltéotl, and Macuilxochitl, and as such, the artist proves that everybody can be free to experiment their sexuality without being judged.

Apart from that, her project also intends to debunk the fictionality of pornography, for it separates us from real pleasure. Sexuality, vaginas, perversions, and myths are some of the elements behind these illustrations that are in favor of sexual diversity and freedom of pleasure.
