You’ve been thinking about getting a tattoo. You know you want something different, but are not entirely sure what. This might be the first time you get some ink on your skin, or you might be scouring your body for some precious real estate to place the next creation in. But unlike the several options available out there, you’re looking for something discreet, soft, and sophisticated.

@gui.tomastattoosThere is a tattooing technique where the artist will use one needle instead of the more mainstream multi-needle machine. This results in extremely fine lines that create a very illustrator-like result. It looks as if someone took a very fine drawing pencil and traced a beautiful silhouette or the beginning of a sketch on your skin.
@_dr_woo_One myth we should mention straight away is that just because it’s done with a single needle does not mean it will hurt less. Considering how the design will focus more on the outlines rather than the shading, sharp pain is something that’s very likely.

@_dr_woo_One thing to keep in mind is that not every design is made for this technique. This one is about a limited color scheme, mostly monochromatic. The design needs to be simple. It can have details, just not a lot of dimension. Before heading straight on to the parlor, I’d suggest looking for artists who do this style of tattooing and check out what their other works look like.
@adressanyo
@_dr_woo_Another thing to consider is not trying and mixing all your body art ideas in one tattoo. If you like one technique, whether it’s single needle or watercolor, choose one or the other. The first reason is for practicality. An expert artist will be specialized in one kind of tattoo style. It’s not that they can’t do another, but it’s not their strong suit.

@miko_nyctattooThink about size and placement. Most single needle designs are small or medium at best. This technique seems to work best on cute little sketches of things or words. It can take you back to that first road trip you took as a child. It could remind you of a love gone by. It might even be a reminder for you to laugh at the silliness of life.

@_dr_woo_While several artists, such as Dr. Woo, have become pop culture icons because of their beautiful designs being placed on very famous bodies, such as Erin Wasson and Chiara Ferragni, there is something very old school and low-key about this style. It almost feels like this would be what flappers would’ve worn under their dresses. As if you can almost picture a bootlegger’s arm being exposed, while carrying a case of moonshine and showing off a shamrock or a bottle.
@andressanyo
@shaulintemple.tatuAccording to Dr. Woo, many of his clients would rather have several little tattoos instead of an entire sleeve or chest design. As for placing they’re done all over, but many women prefer ones that can be easily hidden, like on the bikini or rib area, back of the arm, even on the back, where it will be hidden beneath their hair.
@zionele
@marvelous_tattooerIt’s important to also take a lot of consideration about the after care. Each tattoo artist has their own method or suggestions for how to look after your new ink. That being said, there are plenty of methods that have been proven to work all over. Do your research prior to your appointment to ensure you don’t get any last minute surprises. But most of all, revel in the variety of choices in terms of style, technique, and design.
