Ecological art, environmental art, or eco-art are some of the names used to refer to the artistic expression that deals with ecological or environmental themes. It also refers to works that use the natural environment to express a related theme. Ecological art aims to connect the viewer with nature or with some issue affecting the planet through mediums such as photography, sculpture, painting, dance, theater, literature, and so forth.

Artists following this movement express their feelings about the fragility of nature, seeking to raise awareness about humanity’s impact on Earth. They integrate elements from ecosystems, such as leaves, stones, branches, or sand, and importantly, they do not contribute to environmental degradation, often using eco-friendly materials.

Its origin is attributed to the 1960s when the political and social circumstances of the time sparked awareness about human impact on the planet. It was during this period that Land Art emerged, a movement that uses natural landscapes and materials without disturbing the environmental balance.
Characteristics of Ecological Art Include:
- Highlighting different artists’ perceptions of particular ecological crises.
- Emphasizing community participation, dialogue, and communication for ecosystem conservation.
- Raising awareness about global environmental issues.
- Questioning issues such as labor abuse, overpopulation, resource mismanagement, excessive consumption, toxic waste disposal, species extinction, deforestation, and ineffective climate change policies.
- Promoting attitudes and values in favor of conservation.

Pioneers of this movement include notable figures such as Dutch sculptor Herman de Vries, who creates works using natural elements from around the world to highlight biodiversity. Also noteworthy is the work of Scottish sculptor Andy Goldsworthy, who for the past twenty years has been creating art in forests and riverbeds using only his hands as tools.
Currently, there are various forms of art aiming to touch the audience’s sensitivity towards the natural world, ranging from street art to theater pieces depicting everyday life concerning the theme.

Art has been the most beautiful means of expression for centuries, conveying messages through a single image, sound, or texture. Environmental protection finds an excellent platform in art to impact and motivate millions of people to cherish the beauty bestowed upon us by nature.
