The National Museum of Mexican Art (NMMA)

The NMMA is one of the largest Latinx cultural institutions in America, featuring Mexican, Latino, and Chicano art and culture like few other places around. Located in Chicago, Illinois, it was founded in 1982 with the sole mission to display and spread Mexican culture—taking it beyond any and all national borders.

As the Museum itself writes on its official page,

“While our presence has grown, the NMMA remains true to our founding mission: To showcase the beauty and richness of Mexican culture by sponsoring events and presenting exhibitions that exemplify the majestic variety of visual and performing arts in the Mexican culture; to develop, conserve and preserve a significant permanent collection of Mexican art; to encourage the professional development of Mexican artists; and, to offer arts-education programs.”

True to this, the Museum is hosting a memorable event to honor Mexican legend, Juan Gabriel, with the sole purpose to celebrate his music and legacy.

El Noa Noa: A Tribute to Juan Gabriel

The event will feature live music by Madera Once, a drag show presented by some of the most popular queens from Chicago as they dance to JuanGa’s songs, and a dancing floor where guests will be able to enjoy the party well into the night. The locale will also have a small marketplace (a “mercadito”) filled with souvenirs inspired by the Mexican singer, as well as food trucks with authentic Mexican tacos.

Sounds good, right? If you’re 21 years old and above, you can get your tickets here (they’re $30) and head to the Pilsen neighborhood in Chicago on September 13 or 14. You might as well take advantage and see the lively party spirit that both Juan Gabriel and Mexico are famous for!
