In the vast internet world, one of the most popular memes belongs to singer Adele; it shows her with a disgusted look in an uncomfortable situation (something anyone can relate to). The image went viral over two years ago when the singer attended an NBA basketball game and is still used today on social media and other digital platforms.
After millions of likes, shares, and comments on social media, the Easy On Me singer has broken her silence and addressed the reason behind her peculiar expression in front of the cameras.
“Remember that viral meme where I looked like I didn’t give a damn?” Adele asked during her Las Vegas residency over the weekend.
Minutes later, she recreated the gesture, looking from left to right to avoid eye contact with the audience, just as she did in front of the NBA cameras on February 20, 2022, at the All-Star Game with her boyfriend, sports agent Rich Paul.
The star explained that before the start of the game, the filming team approached her to ask if they could record her for the broadcast, to which she politely declined due to her dislike of fame and preference for keeping a low profile in public places. However, the team filmed her anyway against her wishes, so the singer chose to avoid making eye contact with the camera.

“Do you remember that viral meme of me looking like I didn’t give a damn? I’d like to give some context to that meme. I know it seems crazy, but I really don’t like being famous, you know? So obviously, I know I’m sitting courtside at a basketball game, whatever. But Rich (Paul) was working in the suite and, you know, talking to other players and people. I was fine. I didn’t care. I was there alone, looking for Michael Jordan, to be honest,” Adele shared.
The star detailed that the camera team at the Rocket Mortgage Fieldhouse in Cleveland had approached her twice while she was sitting alone to ask if she felt comfortable being filmed, which she rejected on both occasions. Still, her image appeared on the game screen and national television.
“They said, ‘Do you mind if we film you? Can we put you on the screen?’ I said, ‘Please don’t. I just canceled my Las Vegas residency. I don’t want to be on camera.’ They came back and filmed me (…) I just wanted to give a little context. Because I ignored looking anywhere but at the camera. I was very upset because I asked not to be filmed. Plus, my face is very memeable. I can’t help it.”
No Filler Needed
The singer also addressed comments about her physical appearance in the meme, especially focusing on criticism of her lips, which have been the subject of speculation about cosmetic procedures.
“I have naturally big lips… I don’t need filler. The reason I looked like a different person was that I was annoyed. Because I was like: ‘These sons of b*thces are back and they’re filming me against my will’.”
