Madonna has stirred up controversy after sharing a couple of AI-generated images on her Instagram stories, where she is seen alongside Pope Francis.
In the photos, shared with her nearly 20 million followers, Madonna appears with the Catholic Church’s highest leader, embracing him in a rather suggestive manner. Alongside the images, the pop icon added captions such as “Heading into the weekend like…” and “Feels good to be seen.”
The images sparked a wave of reactions on social media, ranging from fans who saw it as another one of Madonna’s jokes to critics who denounced the photos, claiming they depicted the Pope “harassing” the singer.
Madonna’s Criticism of the Catholic Church
The images appear to have been created by digital artist RickDick, whom Madonna tagged in her stories. In a 2023 address, the Pope had already warned about the risks of AI being used unethically, emphasizing that it should serve humanity, not the other way around.

Responses to the posts included comments like “She’s so weird” and “I love her sense of humor.” It’s worth noting that Madonna has often clashed with the Catholic Church over its stance on contentious issues like the use of contraception and same-sex relationships.

At the same time, her complicated relationship with Catholicism—despite identifying as a believer—has deeply influenced her aesthetic and music videos. Over the years, various outlets have reported that Madonna has been excommunicated at least three times, though the Vatican has never officially confirmed such claims.
