In a world where stories of love, acceptance, and personal transformation can sometimes feel few and far between, Airyn De Niro’s journey offers hope and inspiration. The 29-year-old daughter of Hollywood icon Robert De Niro recently shared her story in an exclusive interview with Them magazine. It’s a story that doesn’t just touch on her transition, but also celebrates the power of family, identity, and the courage to embrace who you truly are.
Airyn De Niro on Her Transition and Hormone Therapy
In her interview, Airyn “came out” as a transgender woman, sharing her decision to begin hormone therapy in November 2024. Throughout her conversation, it became clear how important her upbringing was in shaping her path.

“They have told me they wanted me to have as much of a normal childhood as possible,” Airyn explained about her parents’ decision to shield her from the public eye. Robert De Niro and her mother, Toukie Smith, allowed her the space to explore and discover who she really was.
One of the most poignant moments in her interview came when she discussed the challenges of fitting into society’s often narrow standards of beauty and identity. Airyn revealed that growing up, she felt like she was always “too much of something or not enough of something.” Her journey, however, became one of self-love and appreciation for who she truly is.
“I’d want to hopefully be an inspiration for at least one other person like me who is Black, who is queer, who’s not a size extra small,” she shared.
Airyn’s pride in embracing her Black identity and the influence of Black women on her transition underscores her dedication to representing marginalized voices within the trans community.
Does Robert De Niro Support Her Daughter?

Throughout her transition, Robert De Niro has shown nothing but love and support for his daughter. Airyn emphasized that her father encouraged her to carve out her own path to success, without leaning on his fame. Despite the public’s intrusive gaze, De Niro’s support remained steadfast.
“There’s a difference between being visible and being seen,” Airyn said, highlighting the complexity of living in the public eye while still seeking personal authenticity.
She also shared a really inspiring message stating: “I want to see more trans women, more Black women who are maybe bigger-bodied or don’t fit the mold of super thin or heroin chic.” It’s a message of inclusion, representation, and hope for a future where everyone can live their truth.
Her journey, though personal, serves as a beacon for many others navigating similar paths. It’s a reminder that, despite the struggles we face, there is always room for love, understanding, and acceptance in the world.
