Anne Hathaway has opened up about her personal life and revealed that she had a miscarriage during an off-Broadway play performance and the difficulties of trying to have a baby.
In her latest interview with Vanity Fair, the actress from films like ‘The Princess Diaries,’ ‘Interstellar,’ and ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ shared details about an Instagram post she made in 2019 when she was expecting her second child.
“It’s not for a movie…. All kidding aside, for everyone going through infertility and conception hell, please know it was not a straight line to either of my pregnancies. Sending you extra love.” the star wrote as a caption to a black-and-white photo of her baby bump.
“It felt fake”
When asked about this topic, the actress opened up and said, ““Given the pain I felt while trying to get pregnant, it would’ve felt disingenuous to post something all the way happy when I know the story is much more nuanced than that for everyone.”
Regarding her miscarriage, the Oscar-winning actress revealed that in 2015, she suffered a miscarriage while starring in “Grounded,” a one-woman play, off-Broadway that lasted six weeks.
““The first time it didn’t work out for me. I was doing a play and I had to give birth onstage every night,” she recounted, adding that although she kept the loss of her baby a secret, she told the truth to her friends when they visited her backstage. “It was too much to keep it in when I was onstage pretending everything was fine…”

“I had to keep it real otherwise…. So when it did go well for me, having been on the other side of it—where you have to have the grace to be happy for someone—I wanted to let my sisters know, ‘You don’t have to always be graceful. I see you and I’ve been you.’” she said.
“It’s really hard to want something so much and to wonder if you’re doing something wrong.” Hathaway added.
Anne is a mother of two children she shares with her husband Adam Shulman, 4-year-old Jack, and 8-year-old Jonathan.
