The BAFTAs held their ceremony this Sunday, where they awarded the best of cinema. And even though Oppenheimer swept the awards, the achievement has been overshadowed by the British Academy of Film and Television Arts snubbing the late actor Matthew Perry in the In Memoriam segment, who passed away in October 2023.
On social media, fans of the actor who brought Chandler Bing to life in the sitcom Friends lashed out against the organization for forgetting the American star during the tribute dedicated to remembering all the industry personalities who passed away in the past year.
“No mention of Matthew Perry in the #BAFTA memorial?!” “Hannah Waddingham’s voice is so beautiful. It’s a shame BAFTA left Matthew Perry out of the list.” “Nothing about Matthew Perry in the #BAFTA memorial? Seems disrespectful. Did they forget?”, are some of the comments fans expressed via X, formerly known as Twitter.
Among the comments, there was also one pointing out that the actor was not only known for Friends but also had a long successful career in cinema. After the controversy, the X account of the academy responded that Perry’s absence in the In Memoriam was not due to an oversight but that the actor would be honored in the ceremony dedicated to television in May this year.
Despite the Academy’s justification, fans didn’t calm down their complaints and remembered that Perry also had a notable career in cinema, in films like 17 Again, Fools Rush In, and The Whole Ten Yards.
