Just a week after Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt’s daughter Shiloh decided to drop “Pitt” from her last name, a source close to Brad told PEOPLE that he’s “aware and upset” about it.
“He knows and is pretty bummed that Shiloh dropped his last name. When she was born, it was the happiest he’d ever been. He always wanted a daughter,” says the source.
“The fact that he’s lost touch with his kids is really tough for Brad. He loves and misses them a lot. It’s super sad,” the insider adds.

“He’s happy with Ines [de Ramon],” the source continues, but being away from his kids “really hurts him.”
“He still loves all his kids so much,” another source close to Brad Pitt tells PEOPLE. “This whole situation has been really hard on the entire family.”
As someone familiar with the situation confirmed to PEOPLE, Shiloh’s documents were filed on Monday, May 27, which was also her 18th birthday. She’s asking for a new legal name, wanting to go by just “Shiloh Jolie.”

Jolie, 48, and Pitt, 60, have six kids: Maddox, 22, Zahara, 19, Shiloh, Pax, 20, and twins Knox and Vivienne, 15.
Shiloh isn’t the only one going by a different name. In the Playbill for the new musical The Outsiders, which their daughter Vivienne helped produce with Jolie, she’s listed as “Vivienne Jolie” instead of “Vivienne Jolie-Pitt,” PEOPLE confirmed.

It’s not clear yet if Vivienne has also legally changed her name.
Last November, while joining the Mu Pi chapter of the Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority at Spelman College, the oldest daughter, Zahara, introduced herself as “Zahara Marley Jolie,” according to a video shared by Essence.
These name changes come after years of tension in Pitt’s relationship with his kids since Jolie filed for divorce and sole custody in 2016.
In August 2022, a Pitt source told PEOPLE that Brad was hoping to get to a better place with his kids amid the ongoing custody battle. They said, “It’s been a sad situation for years.”

“Since Angelina filed for divorce, Brad has been focused on having the best relationship possible with his kids,” the insider said. “It’s been really hard for him. There have been long periods where he didn’t see the kids at all.”
In a recent filing over their winery Chateau Miraval, a former security guard for the couple, who still works for Pitt, claimed in legal documents obtained by PEOPLE that Jolie allegedly “encouraged” the kids to “avoid spending time” with Pitt during visits. Paul Murphy, Jolie’s attorney, told PEOPLE that “all Angelina has ever wanted was separation and health, with positive relationships between all family members, including Mr. Pitt.”
