A couple of months ago, Elijah Blue Allman’s estranged wife reported that his mother, Cher, had hired some men to ‘kidnap‘ him in an attempt to send him to rehab. Although the iconic musician and actress denied the accusations, it seems the problems her son has are really serious, as she has now filed for a conservatorship of Elijah alleging substance abuse and mental health issues.
People Magazine got their hands on some documents filed in the Los Angeles Superior Court, which states that the Mamma Mia! star is asking to become her son Elijah Allman’s sole conservator of his estate. The documents claim that he is “substantially unable to manage his financial resources.”
Unlike the most infamous conservatorship we know, Britney Spears’ case or Michael Oher, Cher isn’t looking to deprive her son of his belongings. This is more of an urgent way to “protect Elijah’s property from loss or injury since he is currently unable to manage his assets due to severe mental health and substance abuse issues.”
As the documents read, “Elijah is entitled to regular distributions from the Trust, but given his ongoing mental health and substance abuse issues, Cher is concerned that any funds distributed to Elijah will be immediately spent on drugs, leaving Elijah with no assets to provide for himself and putting Elijah’s life at risk.” This means, that Cher would be in charge of providing the necessary for her son until he becomes able to recover.
The documents also claim that Elijah’s wife, Marieangela King, isn’t fit to become his conservator, which would be the first option in this legal procedure. They argue that “their tumultuous relationship has been marked by a cycle of a drug addiction and mental health crises.”
Beyond the legal petition, the documents also delve into Cher’s constant attempts to help her son treat his addictions and state that this isn’t a matter of money but loving and strict measures to finally force him to seek the treatment he needs to save his life. “Cher loves Elijah immensely and has always acted with his best interests in mind.”
Earlier this year, when asked about the alleged kidnapping, Cher denied the accusations but opened up about her relationship with her son Elijah. She bluntly said that she’s “not suffering from any problem that millions of people in the United States aren’t.”
She even added that, although her attempts to help him have had a toll on their relationship, at the end of the day this is her job, “You do anything for your children. Whenever you can help them, you just do it because that’s what being a mother is. But it’s joy, even with heartache — mostly, when you think of your children, you just smile and you love them, and you try to be there for them.”
Although the word conservatorship makes us think of all the abuse and ambition behind Britney Spears‘ tragic case, in this case, it’s clear Cher is appealing to the original nature of the legal process, a way to help someone who isn’t fit to take care for themselves and their best interests.
