What was supposed to be a night of celebration at Club New York in Manhattan quickly turned into chaos, leading to a shooting, a high-speed chase, and their eventual arrest.
How a Night Out Turned Chaotic: The 1999 Club Shooting That Landed Diddy and JLo in Jail
The drama unfolded when Diddy and J.Lo attended a party for the rising artist Jamal “Shyne” Barrow. Everything was going smoothly until a minor altercation escalated into a serious conflict.
Jennifer Lopez accidentally spilled a drink on another clubgoer, Matthew Allen. What could’ve been a small incident became heated when Diddy flaunted a wad of cash in front of Allen, saying, “You’re not the only one with money.” That’s when things took a wild turn.
Allen, clearly aggravated, exchanged words with the rapper, and soon enough, shots were fired inside the crowded nightclub. According to the NY post, there were at least 3 injured: Natanya Ruben, 29, had a bullet lodged in her cheek, Julius Jones, 27, was shot in the shoulder and Robert Thompson, 39, was grazed.
Amidst the chaos, Diddy, J.Lo, Shyne, and bodyguard Anthony “Wolf” Jones quickly fled the scene in a Lincoln Navigator, but their getaway was cut short when the police caught up to them after a high-speed chase. The car was pulled over, and a stolen, loaded gun was found inside.
Lopez, 29, Combs, 30, his ex-con bodyguard and his driver fled the chaos in a Lincoln Navigator SUV registered to the rap star’s Bad Boy record company — speeding through 11 red lights while cops pursued them, police said.
Both Diddy and Jennifer were arrested, with Diddy facing charges related to gun possession and his involvement in the shooting. J.Lo, in tears, was exonerated quickly, while Diddy and his entourage faced a much longer legal battle.
“The charges against Lopez — who bawled in her holding cell, according to cops — were dropped. More than 12 hours after the “Out of Sight” star was arrested, she was spirited out of a back door and bundled into a black Mercedes.”
In the end, while Shyne was convicted and sentenced to nearly nine years in prison, Sean Combs was acquitted after a weeks-long trial. But the incident haunted both him and Jennifer Lopez for years. J.Lo would later describe the shooting as a “complete nightmare,” stating that she had no idea what was happening that night.
Did Diddy Pull The Trigger?
Reports vary on whether P. Daddy himself pulled the trigger, but what’s certain is that three people were wounded, including a woman named Natanya Reuben who was shot in the face.
According to Forbes, Reuben was interviewed on NewsNation earlier this week and said she was willing to have a doctor remove part of the bullet still in her face from the shooting if needed to reopen the case against Combs. “Who better to tell you what happened than the person who got shot smack dab in between my eyes?” she said.
Reuben says she found out about Diddy’s recen arrest by her daughter. “I said, ‘Are you kidding me, really?’ She said, ‘Yes!’ I just screamed out to God, ‘Thank you, merciful father!’”
Also, Rodney “Lil Rod” Jones Jr. filed a civil lawsuit last month against Combs and actor Cuba Gooding Jr. for sexual assault and harassment where he claims Combs had “displayed his guns and bragged about getting away with shooting people.” He also alleged Lopez “carried the firearm into the club for him and passed him the gun after he got into an altercation with another individual.”
