Dr. James Gill, Chief Medical Examiner for the Connecticut Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, said that the “broken heart syndrome” theory is plausible given the circumstances.
“He’s got a history of heart disease. He’s got a pacemaker. So that would not be unusual. But the unusual part is, why then did she also collapse?” Gill said. “There is this thing where the stress of seeing someone die could have triggered a natural death in her.”
Hackman, known for iconic roles in The French Connection and Unforgiven, had a well-documented history of heart issues. In a 2009 interview with Empire, he revealed that a stress test had convinced him to retire from acting in 2004.
“The doctor advised me that my heart wasn’t in the kind of shape that I should be putting it under any stress,” Hackman said.

While two dogs survived—a German Shepherd named Bear and an Akita-shepherd mix named Nikita—a 12-year-old Australian Kelpie mix named Zinna was found dead in a closed kennel. “Couples who die in a dual suicide are usually together in bed,” he said. “The fact that they’re in two separate locations tells me that’s less likely.”

“That possibility can’t be settled on or ruled out until the results of the toxicology report come in,” he noted.
