Judge Frank Caprio was born on November 24, 1936, in the Federal Hill neighborhood of Providence, Rhode Island. The son of Italian immigrants, he grew up in a working-class family where hard work and community values were central. His father worked as a fruit peddler and milkman, instilling in Frank a strong appreciation for service and dedication.

Caprio attended Providence public schools while working as a dishwasher and shoe-shiner to support himself. After graduating from Central High School, he earned a bachelor’s degree from Providence College in 1958. He later taught American government at Hope High School while attending night classes at Suffolk University School of Law, where he earned his law degree.
Caprio served in the Rhode Island Army National Guard from 1954 to 1962. He began his political career on the Providence City Council in 1962 and later chaired the Rhode Island Board of Governors for Higher Education. In 1985, he was appointed Chief Judge of the Providence Municipal Court, a position he held until his retirement in 2023.
Judge Caprio became a social media sensation through the television show Caught in Providence (2018–2020). The show highlighted his compassionate approach in the courtroom, often listening to personal stories and occasionally forgiving fines. His empathetic demeanor earned him multiple Daytime Emmy nominations and a devoted following online.
Beyond his courtroom work, Caprio was actively involved in community service. He established scholarships at Providence College and Suffolk Law School and supported organizations like the Rhode Island Food Bank. In 2025, he published his memoir Compassion in the Court, sharing transformative stories and lessons from his life and career.

Judge Caprio passed away on August 20, 2025, at the age of 88 after a battle with pancreatic cancer. He is survived by his wife Joyce, five children, seven grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. His legacy of kindness, humility, and belief in the goodness of people continues to touch millions of hearts.
