Actor Lee Sun-kyun, from the Oscar-winning movie Parasite, was found dead, South Korean police reported Wednesday. According to local media, the 48-year-old actor was found dead inside a vehicle in central Seoul.
Local police are investigating an apparent drug-related suicide. Lee Sun-kyun went down in history for playing Park Dong-ik, one of the main characters in the film Parasite, winner of four Oscars in 2020, including Best Picture, the first movie in a foreign language to win the statuette.
South Korea’s Yonhap news agency reported that police had been searching for Lee after his family reported that he left home after writing a message similar to a suicide note early Wednesday. A man was later found unconscious in a Seoul park and identified by police as Lee. Just minutes later Lee’s death was confirmed.
In addition to Parasite, Lee was a well-known figure in South Korean films and series, such as Coffee Prince (2007), the medical drama Behind The White Tower, Pasta (2010), and My Mister (2018).
