Even more shocking details surface following Liam Payne’s horrifying death. In a heartbreaking confession, Nicole Scherzinger was reportedly in contact with the former One Direction member on the very day he died.
During an interview with Billboard, famed composer Andrew Lloyd Webber, who’s currently working with Scherzinger on Broadway’s Sunset Blvd., spoke about her relationship with the late One Direction singer, revealing how closely they stayed in touch over the years.
Nicole Scherzinger Had To Perform After Finding Out About Liam Payne’s Death
Webber mentioned that Scherzinger, 46, had mentored Payne since his early days in The X Factor UK in 2010, where she famously helped form One Direction by suggesting Payne team up with Harry Styles, Zayn Malik, Louis Tomlinson, and Niall Horan as a group rather than face elimination.
“I suppose something that hasn’t been said, and I suppose I could say, is that of course she mentored Liam, from One Direction,” Webber, said.
“On the Wednesday when he died, she was still texting him,” Webber also shared that Scherzinger only learned of Payne’s tragic death moments before she was set to perform.
“The fact that she even did the show at all is extraordinary,” Webber praised. “She is an amazing, amazing woman and one of the finest performers I’ve ever worked with.”
Scherzinger and Payne recently collaborated on Building the Band, an upcoming Netflix series where she served as a mentor to young talent. The show wrapped filming just a few months before his passing, adding another layer of heartbreak to the recent news.
And, as One Direction fans know, Payne’s journey to stardom began when Scherzinger urged fellow judges Simon Cowell and Louis Walsh to form “an imaginary boy group” rather than let these “little stars” be eliminated.
Her intuition about the boys’ talent helped launch One Direction’s worldwide success, with the group going on to release chart-topping albums and complete sold-out tours before disbanding in 2015. So, in reality, it was her rather than Simon Cowell.

I will forever cherish and treasure the time we shared together, from fifteen years ago when One Direction was born, right up until just a few weeks ago.
It was such a blessing to get to work with you recently. We shared the same love and passion for music and I will forever remember the meaningful and joyful conversations we had.
It’s been so hard to process that you’re no longer here, but I am grateful to have known your kind heart, sweet soul and character.
You brought so much joy, light, and laughter to the lives of those that truly knew you. I will “miss you” my friend and carry you in my heart. My thoughts and prayers are with your family. 🙏🏽♥️
