Khloé Kardashian discussed her decision on the July 30 episode of her podcast Khloé in Wonder Land, explaining why she chose to become the primary caregiver for Amari Thompson, Tristan’s 18-year-old brother. Amari has Lennox-Gastaut syndrome (LGS), which leaves him unable to walk or talk and causing multiple seizures per day.
Her decision wasn’t based on obligation—but on love, loyalty, and years of shared family history.
Who Is Amari Thompson?
Amari lives with Lennox-Gastaut Syndrome, a rare and severe form of epilepsy. He cannot walk or speak and suffers from multiple seizures every single day. His condition requires 24/7 care and a stable, supportive environment.
Before his mother Andrea’s sudden passing in January 2023, Amari lived in Canada under her full-time care. Andrea had been very close to Khloé, and Khloé had already been involved in Amari’s medical journey for years—attending doctor visits, helping with specialists, and offering hands-on support.
Why Is He Living with Khloé?
Khloé had already been deeply involved in Amari’s medical care—attending appointments and assisting Andrea with doctor connections. She described Andrea as a close friend and said that keeping Amari in LA provided him needed stability, especially given Tristan’s hectic NBA schedule and constant travel.
After Andrea’s passing from a heart attack, Tristan and Khloé worked together to relocate Amari to Los Angeles, where he now lives in Khloé’s home. While Tristan was granted legal guardianship in 2024, his frequent NBA travel made it difficult to provide consistent daily care.
Tristan legally gained guardianship in February 2024, allowing him to manage medical and financial decisions for Amari. However, because of his extensive travel, Khloé and her two hired caregivers now oversee Amari’s day-to-day care in Los Angeles.
That’s where Khloé stepped in—alongside two full-time caregivers—to offer Amari a safe and loving home.
“I don’t care what Tristan and I are going through. Amari is family,” Khloé said on her podcast.
Why She Chose This Role
Khloé explained that her decision wasn’t rooted in her relationship with Tristan, but rather her bond with Andrea and her own personal values.
“She [Andrea] was one of my favorite people. I was very involved in Amari’s life before she passed. I love him deeply.”
She emphasized that Amari is not a burden, but instead a blessing—teaching her children compassion, understanding, and kindness.
Khloé’s children, True (6) and Tatum (1), are growing up alongside Amari. Khloé believes this dynamic has enriched their lives, giving them early exposure to empathy and inclusivity. Her nieces and nephews, including Kim and Kourtney’s kids, have also formed a close bond with him.
Even though Khloé and Tristan broke up in 2021, she continues to be part of his extended family’s life in a meaningful way.
“Family isn’t always about who you’re dating. It’s about who you show up for,” she said.
She clarified that despite online assumptions, her decision had nothing to do with rekindling romance and everything to do with consistency and love.
