In 1989, Ozzy Osbourne’s attempt to strangle Sharon became one of the darkest and most painful moments of their relationship. It was also a pivotal moment in Ozzy’s life.

The incident took place in their Buckinghamshire home in England, while Ozzy was battling a severe addiction crisis. Sharon had just put their children—Aimee, Kelly, and Jack—to bed and was alone in the living room when Ozzy entered, completely intoxicated. In a disturbingly calm voice, he said:
“We’ve decided that you must die,” before lunging at her to strangle her.
Sharon, in a state of panic, managed to press the panic button installed in their home, which triggered a silent alarm, allowing security to arrive just in time. Ozzy was arrested and spent six months in jail, with no memory of the event. Upon waking in his cell, he asked:
“What the hell have I done now?” to which the officer replied: “John Michael Osbourne, you have been arrested for attempted murder.”

Despite the trauma, Sharon decided not to press charges, hoping the incident would serve as a much-needed intervention for Ozzy. He later entered rehabilitation, and although his journey to sobriety was long and fraught with setbacks, that night marked the beginning of his transformation—and the unraveling of their love.
Years later, they both opened up about the incident in the documentary Biography: The Nine Lives of Ozzy Osbourne, where Ozzy described it as “the calmest moment of his life,” while Sharon recalled it as a terrifying night that changed their marriage forever.
Though they remained together, that moment almost broke them. Ozzy even admitted on more than one occasion that, had it not been for Sharon, “he probably would’ve died at that time.”
