Attention!! What just happened is a significant step in Harry and Meghan Markle’s separation from the British monarchy, as Harry has just changed his country of residence from the United Kingdom to the United States.
Despite the Duke and Duchess of Sussex already relocating to Meghan’s home state of California in 2020 when they stepped back from their royal duties within the British monarchy, it’s only now that Prince Harry has officially changed his country of residence to the United States.
The 39-year-old Duke of Sussex filed a notice of change of documentation with the U.K.’s Companies House, and the date of change was recorded as June 6, 2023. This change of residence occurred around the same time the Duke and Duchess left their residence in Windsor. After spending time on Vancouver Island and stepping back from their roles within the royal family, Meghan and Prince Harry bought a house in Montecito, Santa Barbara neighborhood, in the summer of 2020, where their second daughter, Princess Lilibeth, was born in 2021.
It Was Megan Who Was Going To Change Her Nationality, Not Harry
In a February interview with Good Morning America, Prince Harry was asked by Will Reeve if he was enjoying life in the United States, to which he responded affirmatively, saying he felt very comfortable.
“It’s amazing,” the Duke of Sussex replied. “I love every single day.”
When asked again if he felt American, Harry replied that he didn’t know how he felt and although he mentioned that becoming an American citizen was under consideration, it wasn’t actually a priority.
“Do I feel American? Um, no. I don’t know how I feel.”
“I’m here standing next to this with these guys, and the American citizenship is a thought that has crossed my mind but certainly not something that is a high priority for me right now.”
