The Emmys are probably one of the funniest award ceremonies of the year. Celebrating the best of television and streaming shows, this year’s Emmys gave us a very entertaining show that should be awarded as well in the ceremony!
But perhaps one of the highlights of the night, and what had viewers and attendees puzzled was the appearance of a mysterious green goblin guest! Dashing through the red carpet, this magnificent guest had everybody turning their heads and wondering who was behind the amazing prosthetic work and dashing attire.
So, who decided to shock us all at the 2024 Emmys? She was none other than Princess Poppy, star of the 15th season of Ru Paul’s Drag Race. Wearing a stunning green gown and matching handbag with doll heads sewn in, Princess Poppy had amazing makeup and prosthetics work done that certainly stole the spotlight on the red carpet.
According to her, she wanted to “turn viewers heads in the worst way possible,” and she certainly did it. She was inspired by several pop culture characters, including Jabba the Hutt and Roz from Monsters, Inc. “Mainly I wanted to be a troll-slash-hag. I wanted to be so shocking that you just have to turn and look at me,” she said during the event.
Why a troll hag? Well, she wanted to literally troll the concept of these events and “do the exact opposite of what is expected of you when you go to an event like this. I wanted to take decorum and turn it on its head. I wanted to be a troll, to literally and figuratively troll the Emmys.”
Through her show-stopper look, Princess Poppy also wanted to tell people that the “rules of fashion, and rules of beauty are bulls**t;” she’s not wrong! As we know Drag is a revolutionary act, and Princess Poppy gave us a master class on that, but she wasn’t the only one.
Ru Paul’s Drag Race won the award for Best Reality-Competition Program, and Queen Ru gave a very crucial message in this day and age: “If a drag queen wants to read you a story at a library, listen to her because knowledge is power, and if someone tries to restrict your access to power, they are trying to scare you. So listen to a drag queen.”
