They inspired each other. They turned on each other. Now Kanye’s selling Diddy’s clothes while defending him in court.

Kanye West showed up at the Manhattan federal courthouse wearing sunglasses and a white denim set, trailed by Christian Combs and paparazzi. He wasn’t allowed into the courtroom, so he watched the trial from an overflow room and left in a black SUV minutes later. He posted cryptically. He tweeted support. Then he went back to selling T-shirts branded with the name of the man on trial for sex trafficking.

That man is Sean “Diddy” Combs. Once hip-hop royalty. Now the defendant in a federal case involving rape, racketeering, and the alleged use of his inner circle as a criminal enterprise. Kanye is one of the few celebrities still publicly standing next to him—if not physically, then through the feed.

But this isn’t loyalty. It’s what’s left of a toxic friendship turned spectacle.

Their relationship used to be aspirational. Now it’s a cautionary tale.

The Long, Messy History of Kanye West and Diddy’s ‘Brotherhood’

2006–2015: The Collaborations

Their working relationship began in the early 2000s, when Kanye was still a rising producer and Diddy was king of the Bad Boy empire. In 2006, West produced “Everything I Love” on Combs’ Press Play, and in 2015, they teamed up again on Kanye’s “All Day.” At one point, West even joined Diddy’s production group The Hitmen.

They appeared together at a charity event with Prince William and Prince Harry in 2007, and by all accounts, were building something more than music—they were building mythologies.

2022: The Tribute Heard ‘Round the World

At the BET Awards in 2022, Kanye emerged from semi-exile to present Diddy with the Lifetime Achievement Award. Wearing a face mask and gloves, West praised him with breathless reverence:

“This is my favorite artist. I go to him for advice to this day. He inspired so many of my choices—my wife choices.”

It was emotional. It was eccentric. It was very Ye. But above all, it was public affection on the grandest scale.

Then came the T-shirts.

Kanye’s “White Lives Matter” stunt cracked their friendship wide open. Diddy called the shirts “tone deaf” on The Breakfast Club. Kanye fired back with unhinged Instagram screenshots: threatening texts, grandiose statements, accusations, and rage.

“Nobody gets in between me and my money,” Kanye wrote.

“Come do something illegal to me noooow pleeeeeeease.”

“This ain’t a game.”

“Now go get you some business.”

Diddy tried to de-escalate:

“Let’s stop playing these internet games… This is hurting our people.”

Kanye wasn’t having it. The brotherhood became a battle—and the internet got a front-row seat.

2023–2025: Silence, Then Support

After a period of silence, Diddy was spotted at a Rolling Loud performance in early 2024 where Kanye and Ty Dolla $ign performed. But sources say Kanye refused to meet with him. That could’ve been the end—until federal agents raided Diddy’s homes.

Suddenly, Kanye was back.

He released a song called “Diddy Free.” He posted screenshots of text threads. He tweeted: “PLEASE FREE MY BROTHER PUFF.” He began selling Sean John x Yeezy collab T-shirts, claiming he and Diddy had planned it before the arrest. He said he’d send Diddy’s share to his son Justin, since Diddy “can’t collect money while locked up.” He even appeared outside Diddy’s federal trial, trying to get into the courtroom.

If Diddy was toxic to most of the industry now, Kanye was unfazed.

“THEY TRYING TO MAKE AN EXAMPLE OUT OF PUFF,” Kanye wrote.
“ME AND MY BROTHER HAD OUR ISSUES BUT THESE WHITE PEOPLE TRYING TO SCARE N—-S.”

April 2025: Diss Tracks and Leaked Calls

Then, in a move only Kanye could rationalize, he dropped a remix of Kendrick Lamar’s “Like That” with a bar many took as a Diddy diss:

“I just f**** your b**** in a Sean John tank top.”*

This came after federal agents presented 900 bottles of lubricant, firearms with sanded serial numbers, and drugs allegedly found in Diddy’s homes. If it was solidarity, it was messy. If it was shade, it was cruel.

Still, leaked audio of a call between the two surfaced weeks later, with Diddy urging Kanye to make new music and promising to call again.

What’s Left of the Brotherhood

The friendship is over—publicly, definitively, and without much ambiguity. What’s left isn’t a bond, but a brand strategy.

While others distance themselves, Kanye’s kept himself close enough to capitalize but far enough to avoid consequence. He name-drops. He merchandises. He performs proximity without responsibility.

It’s not about loyalty. It’s about control of the narrative. The so-called brotherhood may be done, but the optics are still useful—and Kanye knows exactly how to use them.
