“If you don’t know everything about me yet, that’s fine, but I hope you get to know me better in this interview,” Zayn mentions relaxed in an armchair, talking comfortably with host Alex Cooper of the podcast Call Her Daddy.
After 6 years of not giving an interview and living out of the public eye, singer Zayn Malik talked about his private life and the controversies that have surrounded him: from his beginnings in One Direction to his recent breakup with model Gigi Hadid.
Zayn is the former member of One Direction who has most expressed his interest in staying out of the spotlight, networks, and stages; for example, the singer has never toured or offered public concerts since he went solo. So, of course, he surprised his fans with this interview for the podcast Call Her Daddy, in which he talks honestly about the moments that marked his life, and we learned a lot from his words.
Don’t Be Afraid to Choose You
We were all shocked that March 25, 2015, when we read the statement that Zayn would be leaving the band. The controversy was not long in coming and increased when, in an interview, he stated that he never wanted to be in One Direction and that he was looking to get out from the beginning.
In this episode, Zayn explains that changes were coming in the group that made him think about remaining part of the project. He even admitted to being selfish at the time in wanting to be the first member to make a solo album: “As a person, I can be passive, but if it’s about my business and my music, I’m very competitive,” he stressed.
Friendship Can Be Temporary, and That’s Fine
Throughout the interview, Zayn refers respectfully to all the members of One Direction but admits that by 2015 there were already problems in their friendship that were a natural consequence of living together every day for 5 years.
They felt tired of each other, and although they were very close and shared unique moments, it was time to move on before the relationship frayed further: “We had been together every day for five years, and we got tired of each other if I’m being completely honest.”
Embrace Your Mental Health
“It’s normalized because it’s your job, to stand up in front of thousands of people you don’t know and perform for them, but it’s not natural,” Zayn said when addressing the topic of anxiety, acknowledging that there was a time when he enjoys

Your Family Will Always Stay by You When Things Fall Apart
Zayn explained that he wasn’t afraid when he decided to leave; he just called his mother to ask her if he could come home, and when she said yes, he didn’t hesitate a second longer. He also confessed that now that he has become a father he has discovered new ways to leave her out of that chaotic rhythm.
He stayed on the sidelines when giving his opinion on the fight between Gigi, Yolanda Hadid, and him as he believes that could affect his daughter Khai in the future and assures that when she grows up, she can choose to go home whenever she wants and shelter next to him.
Stopping and Resting is Healthy
Despite having three albums, Zayn has always prioritized his mental health and the value of resting. He said it is necessary to stop for a moment and rethink what he wants to do, in his case, what he wants to give his audience, and that could only be achieved by stopping to reflect on what his identity as an artist was:
“You can’t just stand up and say the same thing over and over again, you need to take a break from the medium, and that was my safe space.”
Acknowledge Your Supporters
From One Direction to the formation of Zquad, Zayn’s fans have supported him in his artistic decisions, something that is very present to the singer, who recognizes that they have been patient with his time and have never pressured him to go on tour. That is why now, on his return, he wants to show them that he is ready and that they are his main engine to continue making music.
