Zendaya and Brigitte Macron: Was Not Standing Up Really Disrespectful?

Zendaya seated at a paris fashion show, poised and composed, at the center of an etiquette controversy with brigitte macron.

At Louis Vuitton‘s Spring/Summer 2027 show in Paris on October 6, 2026, Zendaya greeted France’s First Lady Brigitte Macron with a smile, eye contact, and a handshake — while staying seated. Ten seconds of footage were enough to ignite an etiquette debate that spread across social media overnight, with critics calling the interaction cold and dismissive. But the gap between what the video shows and what people decided it means is worth looking at closely.

What the Video Actually Shows

The clip, shared by pop culture account @popbackupp, runs about 10 seconds. Brigitte Macron walks over to where Zendaya is already seated and mid-conversation with another guest. Zendaya turns, smiles, makes eye contact, and shakes the First Lady’s hand. The exchange is brief. Zendaya does not stand up. That is the entirety of what the footage documents.

Critics landed fast on the seated greeting as proof of disrespect — but the same video shows Zendaya doing the exact same thing with Bernard Arnault, chairman and CEO of LVMH, when he came to her row. She stayed seated for him too. That detail flips the whole narrative: if the behavior was consistent regardless of who approached her, it is much harder to read it as a deliberate slight aimed at Macron. According to Madame Figaro, traditional French etiquette considers standing a courteous gesture — but not an obligation, particularly at a fashion show like Paris Fashion Week, which operates by its own informal rules.

The Etiquette Question No One Is Answering Honestly

Here is the distinction that matters: this was not a state dinner, a diplomatic reception, or an official event with formal presidential protocol. It was a runway show — the kind where guests are packed into rows, conversation is constant, and the social choreography is nothing like a White House visit. Holding a front-row seat at Louis Vuitton to the same standard as an official meeting with a head of state is a category error.

From a strict traditional etiquette standpoint, yes — standing would have been the more formal choice. That is a fair critique. But there is a meaningful gap between ‘could have been more formal’ and ‘was deliberately disrespectful,’ and the online conversation collapsed that gap immediately. As of October 7, 2026, no reporting has established that Brigitte Macron herself was offended by the interaction. The outrage, in other words, is coming entirely from third parties — not from the person it allegedly targeted.

We tend to apply a different level of scrutiny to women’s public behavior, particularly when the woman in question is young, Black, and famous. Zendaya’s posture at a fashion show became a referendum on her character within hours. That pattern is worth naming.
