‘The Bear‘ has become one of the best comedy-drama series in recent years, and it also addresses a very important taboo subject, even though that is not the main plot: the toxic and violent environment in the world of gastronomy.
The culinary industry has been plagued by reports of harassment and bullying. The hierarchical nature of kitchen brigades often creates a culture where abuse is tolerated or even normalized.
Stories of chefs yelling, throwing objects, and belittling staff are all too common. This toxic behavior can create a hostile work environment, leading to long-term psychological effects on employees.
The Terrible Chef Who Inspired the Character That Torments Carmy in ‘The Bear’ Series
In the Emmy-winning series, Carmy, the main character has two traumas that haunt him every day and every moment of his life, one is clearly his mother, played by Jamie Lee Curtis, and the other is chef David Fields, a character played by Joel McHale.

This character must be one of the most ruthless we have seen, because in the series we can see how he constantly yells at Carmy and does not have a single moment of kindness or true leadership.
There is a very strong dialogue where the chef even tells Carmy that he “should be dead.” But, who did the creators get inspiration from to create such a character?
Although what we have mentioned may seem unlikely to happen in a kitchen, the reality is that ‘The Bear’ is much closer than you think to how the “old school” culinary world works, where violence and abuse are extra normalized.
These two shots from The Bear beautifully illustrate good and bad mentorship. Chef David (Joel McHale) weaponizes his expertise through humiliation. Chef Terry (Olivia Colman) shares hers through demystification. I hope Carmy shakes off David’s abuse and follows Terry’s example. pic.twitter.com/ptRjIf3eU1

Since that intense flashback scene with Joel McHale in The Bear Season 1, fans have been speculating about who his brutal character might be based on. Fortunately, McHale cleared up the mystery during an appearance on Late Night with Seth Meyers a few months ago, just before Season 3 dropped.
“I was portraying Chef Thomas Keller,” he revealed, though he was quick to add, “I don’t think he’s as terrible as I was, but he does whisper to his employees.”

Keller is renowned for revolutionizing fine dining and, of course, for his notoriously high-pressure kitchen environments.
What is interesting and funny at the same time, is that Thomas Keller has some cameos in season 3 of ‘The Bear’, but what is surprising and to a certain extent ironic, is his performance as the most gentle, kind chef and good leader for Carmy.
Maybe he wanted to take advantage of the space and vindicate himself? We wouldn’t be surprised.
