On the morning of June 29, as the ship made its way back to Fort Lauderdale after a four-night sailing that included a stop at Lookout Cay, a young girl fell overboard from the fourth deck. Without hesitation, her father jumped into the ocean after her.
“Right after the incident, we heard on the loudspeaker, ‘MOB port side!’” wrote passenger Kevin Furuta on Facebook, referencing the ship’s emergency code for Man Overboard. “Thankfully, the DCL rescue team was on it immediately and both were saved.”
The crew responded in minutes. A rescue boat was deployed. Life preservers were launched. And both the father and daughter were brought safely back aboard—with no injuries.

According to reports from passengers and Facebook cruise groups, the child had been on the walking track area of Deck 4—a space lined with safety barriers—when she somehow fell into the open sea. While some witnesses believe she may have been sitting on the railing, that detail remains unconfirmed.
But what is confirmed: her father leapt after her without pause, holding her afloat in choppy waters for what several passengers estimated was 20 minutes, while the ship slowed and rescue crews mobilized.
“This was the boat that went in and brought them BOTH back safely,” wrote passenger Shannon Pechaek Lindholm. “It was a fast and furious quick rescue, truly a miracle x2.”

The Odds Were Against Them

“The crew aboard the Disney Dream swiftly rescued two guests from the water,” a spokesperson said. “We commend our crew members for their exceptional skills and prompt actions, which ensured the safe return of both guests to the ship within minutes.”
The Disney Dream, launched in 2011, carries up to 4,000 passengers and is one of the line’s largest vessels. The rescue took place on the final day of the sailing—just hours before the ship was set to return to port.
While Disney did not elaborate on how the child went overboard, the company emphasized the success of its emergency protocols and the professionalism of its team.
“We are committed to the safety and well-being of our guests, and this incident highlights the effectiveness of our safety protocols,” the statement read.
