David Lynch Might Retire From Filmmaking After Health Diagnosis

David Lynch, the legendary filmmaker behind surreal masterpieces like Blue Velvet and Mulholland Drive, might be stepping away from directing for good.

In a recent interview with Sight & Sound magazine, Lynch opened up about his health struggles, revealing that he’s been diagnosed with emphysema.

David Lynch’s Health Battle

At 79, David Lynch’s battle with emphysema, a condition caused by years of smoking, has severely limited his physical abilities. He shared, “I’ve gotten emphysema from smoking for so long, and so I’m homebound whether I like it or not. It would be very bad for me to get sick, even with a cold.”

He also emphasized that catching Covid-19 or any other illness could worsen his condition. This reality has forced him to stay home, unable to go out or even walk short distances without struggling for breath.

"i don't know if i would have gotten into drugs, but i was absolutely born to smoke. " david lynch

“I can’t go out… because of COVID, it would be very bad for me to get sick”

Given his health, Lynch admitted that directing on location might be out of the question. He mentioned the possibility of directing remotely, though he wasn’t thrilled about it. “I would do it remotely if it comes to it,” he said, adding, “I wouldn’t like that so much.”

David Lynch’s passion for being on set, immersed in the creative process, makes the idea of remote directing less appealing to him, and we totally get that, and that doesn’t mean he will retire «per se».

But despite these challenges, Lynch hasn’t stopped creating. He recently pitched an animated project called Snootworld to Netflix, although it was turned down. He’s also holding onto hope that his 2010 screenplay, Antelope Don’t Run No More, might still be made. “Well, we don’t know what the future will bring, but we remain hopeful,” he said, showcasing his undying optimism.

So, Is He Retiring?

The possibility of directing is limited by Lynch’s health. However, after concerns sparked by recent news, the American director clarified  on X that he is fine and has no plans to retire. Actually, Lynch has many projects lined up, and he will surely continue working on them.

Lynch’s last major project was the 2017 miniseries Twin Peaks: The Return. Since then, he’s kept busy with smaller projects like the short film What Did Jack Do?, music videos, and a variety of quirky YouTube shorts, weather reports, and number-picking clips. He’s also delved into music, dropping his latest album Cellophane Memories with Chrystabell just last week, following 2018’s Thought Gang, a collaboration with the late composer Angelo Badalamenti.

Lynch has often expressed his love for smoking, which he once considered an integral part of his creative life. “Smoking was something that I absolutely loved, but in the end, it bit me,” he remarked. “It was part of the art life for me: the tobacco and the smell of it, and lighting things and smoking and going back and sitting back and having a smoke and looking at your work, or thinking about things; nothing like it in this world is so beautiful. Meanwhile, it’s killing me. So I had to quit.”

And let’s admit it, if you like David Lynch, you have most definitely seen a picture of him smoking. If you are a fan, though, you might have seen the 1-hour video of David Lynch listening to rain, smoking, and reflecting on art. Such a masterpiece.

What is COPD or Emphysema

David Lynch’s condition, emphysema, is a type of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), a leading cause of death worldwide.

According to the World Health Organization, COPD caused 3.23 million deaths in 2019. Smoking is a major risk factor, accounting for over 70% of COPD cases in high-income countries. COPD symptoms include difficulty breathing, chronic cough, and fatigue. While there’s no cure, avoiding smoking and exposure to air pollution, along with treatments like medications and pulmonary rehabilitation, can help manage symptoms.

Whether or not Lynch returns to directing, his legacy is firmly cemented and fans around the world will  continue to celebrate his remarkable contributions to cinema and art. For now, we can only hope that Mr. Lynch is fine and goes on with his amazing artistic endeavors, whatever form they may take, even if it’s filmmaking and directing from home, doing scripts or even more weather reports.
